I was driving from boston to northern maine 400 miles and then 400 miles back on the way back it was a good 90* i noticed that my 4wd lever was really hot never noticed that before so i pulled over to look under the truck and where the transfer case meets the transmission it was leaking case fluid, wtf  the transfer case still works and shifts fine. I am also getting a bearing wind noise coming from the transmission in 5th gear could this be contributing to the problem is this a whole separate issue? i have a spare transmission and transfer case I am going to put in but im just curious to what is going on with this anyone ever have this problem

1988 4runner 5 speed manual 22 re

what happens if you put the t case in neutral and then put the trans in fith gear and rev it?
noise?
i have seen a few truck make noise in the W56 transmissions. they were abused and it casued them to make noise.

i checked the fluid levels in everything before the trip and every thing was fine. I do get the wine when i have the truck in nutral when the cluch is in i dont i am slmost sure that it is the bearings in the frountof the trany i will try and put the transfer case in nutral and see if i still get it. i also cant find any breathers for the transmision to vent or the transfercase to vent i thought maybe this would be the problem with it geting realy hot

well after powerwashing 1/4 inch of mud off he transmision i found that i could unbolt the 4wd lever with my two fingers so i took it off cleaned the gasket, re-torqued and drove the snot out of her...no leak still going to repace the tranny since the wine really irratetes me:crybaby:

if there is noise while the trans in in any gear, including neutral, and the nose goes away when you push in the clutch it is the transmission input bearing.
you can get a trans rebuild kit at AllTrans (in Portland,OR) for 80 bucks.

if you havent done a trans before, its somthing you dont want to dive into. it takes some kind of technical expertise.

you need snap ring pliers, bearing separator, a hydro press, and punches.

hopefully full syn gear oil will help with the heat

50/50 let go get it :flipoff2:

transfer heat

I have the same engine/trans/etc(1991 edition); I noticed on a longer trip recently that while the trans stick stays cool(slightly warm, actually), the transfer lever gets fairly hot...not burning hot, but hot to the touch. Fluid good, no strange noises. Maybe they're all like this?

He has a bit of paranoia when it comes to his only child.(his 4 runner that is)

since i swaped over the outher engine and transfercase with the syn fluid it has stayed fairley cool I know the bearings were going and most likely generating a lot of heat
