Hey gang,

Took the KZJ78 out for it's first true wheeling this weekend. Handled everything like a champ. When i'm in Low range and Low gear (auto) i noticed a whining/ticking sound coming from what I think is the transfer case (I was always in the truck and it was hard to pinpoint) Should I be concerned or is this normal. Heard it most when using engine braking going down steep hills.

Cheers!

I had a noise come thru when in low and going down hills under engine braking, turned out the torque twisted the gearbox against its mounts and one side of the transfercase was touching the body.... sounded terrible....
The low range gears will whine a bit.... Might be a good idea to do oil change if you haven't already.

I just put royal purple gear oil in the transfer case about a month ago so that should be pretty good on that end. I doubt it's a bearing or anything as it's just in low low. Good to know that it whines a bit in that setting and I probably shouldn't be too worried about it.

Thanks mate, I appreciate the response.

Almost all the Jeep owners I knew had a whining sound when operating in 4 Low.
The '98 Jeep XJ I had for 21 years with a NP 231 and a 4:1 TeraLow would whine quit a bit in all 5 gears of the manual transmission.
The whining was more pronounced with the deeper gear ratios.

In low range you have the input from the engine turning fast and the output gears turning slowly, this always creates transmission whine. Most landcruisers are on the road in Hi 98% of the time and its rare to see the low range gears and bearings wear out if the oil is changed regularly

Thanks! Good to know. I have been doing regular oil changes and use high quality synthetic. Might try adding some archoil friction modifier in my diffs (open not LSD or lockers) and transfer case.

Are you sure the rear is not LSD? Can you post a picture of the VIN tag under the hood? It'll have the axle details....

I'm pretty sure it's not LSD, with one wheel on the ground and the other jacked up I can spin it no problems. I have a photo of the tag, how do I upload it?

Thanks!
