Had a general question for the forum on this for my 96 FJ80.

When I place my hand on the transfer case shift knob, i get a fair amount of vibration coming thru the knob. The knob isn't visibly vibrating, but it can definitely be felt. No other weird noises are ocurring when driving down the road. Also, there is really no vibration when I place my hand on the transmission shift knob. Is some transfer case vibration normal at the sift knob, or should I be looking to see what might be the source of the vibration?

Thanks in advance, Eric

As long as you are on smooth roads felt vibration is nothing to worry about. if you can see it vibrate I would be looking at your U-joints!

Mine does that. That knob is physically connected to the transfer case.

The transmission shifter is mounted to the body, isolated from drive train movement/vibration, the transfer shifter is mounted to transmission, so isn't isolated.

Old thread, but mine started making a loud noise at the tcase shifter....If you put your hand on it it stops, let go and its pretty bad. I was thinking it might be the shifter bushing bad?

Sounds logical, the lever goes in to a "cup" with a shaft out the side to a lever, rod to range selector input lever, connected to the shift forks, shift forks connected to the... never mind. The rod against the cup housing would be the only thing that I could think of that would vibrate and stop when you put your hand on it. If the bushings are worn, and the rod comes out of the cup easily, then the hardest part of the bushing replacement job is already done. I had to decide I didn't care if I broke mine before I was able to get it loose. Of course as stuck as mine was, I'm not sure how much my truck had ever seen low range.

Good luck !

Jason

normal to feel a little bit of vibration on it.
More so when under load and it should disappear when coasting

@robnicko No its not feel at all.....it is loud accelerating or cruising, vibration gear noise. Even when its topped off with oil. If I hold the shifter it goes away.
