when i am using the compression of the motor to go down hill the tranfer case will pop into nuetral ocasionally.anyone have any ideas as to the cuase.

The TLCFAQ at Birfield.com says this:

"Transmissions/transfer cases popping out of gear are either the shifter binding against the boot, bad motor/tranny mounts or a desparate cry for a rebuild. If it's the latter and it's left for any length of time, severe gear/shift collar damage will result and rebuild costs will increase exponentially."

Since we are not aware of what you are working with, I will throw this one out there, as the most common of instances is with an Orion. I definitely do not have the same issue with mine yet, but the condition exists nevertheless.

I will be proactive, and just drop this link because this is probably your problem, or may give you some insight.

So since we don't know what trans and tcase are in the truck, and there have been threads on the Orion not staying in gear in the past, even though, the Orion transfer case not staying in gear issue has been rectified, and depending on your serial number quite possibly may not ever be an issue for you, you somehow think that this is applicable, and that you are still at some risk of your Orion not staying in gear?

There are thousands more stock cases in use compared to an Orion.....to say:

is not accurate to say the least. The Orion has 40+ years of catch up to do before you can claim it is more common than a stock case not staying in gear....

I guess I fail to see the connection you are trying to make with this....

Loose engine mounts and poor or loose shift linkage is applicable to this issue for just about any trans and tcase combo in a vehicle....

Beyond that, if you need specifics, we will need to know what you have.

It could also be the shift fork springs and little ball bearings in the transfer case.

Just throwing something else out there that i have come across myself.

ok, it is a 351w with a np435 and stock 3 speed tranfer case in a 68....shifter has been modified to shift to 2lo....will pop out in 2lo and 4 lo

Poser,

I stand corrected.

I see that my statement was lacking proper knowledge in this subject. Pardon my ignorance. My original intent was to point him out to a thread that included scenarios that pertain to the issue at hand. That thread seemed to have alot to say on the subject. Apparently, I should have stayed out of this one.

The first thing that I would do after verifying the condition of the engine mounts and that the linkage going through the floor is not possibly contacting somewhere, would be to verify that the range selector for the transfer case is actually moving the lever on the case all the way into a range, and that there is not any slop or free play in the linkage. If the case is being shifted properly into gear and still not staying in gear, then some diagnosis of the transfer case out of the truck is in order....

Good luck!

thanks..will check the motor mounts and linkage....if the motor mounts are bad is it an issue of it allowing the linkage to hit the body and shifting it.i have been suspecting the tranny mount for other issue but a motor mount would cause the same thing.
and where does one get new motor mounts on a converted cruiser?

Most likely.

Yes.

Post up a couple pics of what is in your truck and someone can likely identify what was used and where you could go to get something new.
