Hi all, I'm installing a refreshed transmission & transfer into my PZJ77 and have hit a snag.

In the rebuild the output shaft bearing retainer was installed ~180 degrees out, so now the speedo cable won't connect.

Am I able to unbolt the retainer, rotate & re-bolt while it is still on the car? Or will this require some specialist knowledge/tools?

I've just got it all back in, so having to do through all of the fuss of removing it again and getting it sorted by the shop is not a pleasant thought.

Thanks in advance.

No problem to turn it around whilst installed, but I do wonder about the quality of a rebuild where the retainer was put on in completely the wrong orientation. Do you know if the rebuilder set the pre-load on the output shaft bearings?

Thanks for the response.

The rebuild was done by a reasonably big/well reviewed shop here, so I assume it's all to spec otherwise.

The trans was sent to them seperate from the car, so I guess they didn't have the cable location on the car as a ref. Could have paid a bit more attention when dismantling it though.

You might be able to gently rotate it without tearing gasket. If FIPG used it won't.

I know more than a few shops in the US that do not reshim the bearing race to set preload. I am not a shop, but every single tcase (>15) I have been party to we have reset the preload.

Thanks Rick.

I did end up contacting the shop too for their advice. Though I’d better because I don’t want to void the warranty for their work.

It's a pretty poor shop that doesn't understand the importance of pre-load on taper roller bearings. The 60 I am restoring had major problems on the rear diff and rear axle spindles from just this.

Thanks Rick.

Given that they have not even made anti-tamper marks on the bolts, they are not going to know, but you can at least ask them if they checked the bearing pre-load.

I did get a hold of them, and will take it in once she’s back on the road so they can rotate it themselves and make sure it’s all sealed up properly once done.
