bought a 2009 gx with 140K miles on it. Just had all the fluids flushed. when the temps drop below 25 degrees I can hear a very faith gear noise that seems to be coming from the transfer case. If i pull the 4h/4L lever towards the center it seems to decrease. does anyone else have this? is this considered normal noise? I am coming out of a 4Runner and never had noise but that was also a switch from 4H to 4Lo.

A higher pitched gear whine that never seems to go away?

Quite a few people have reported this over on the facebook group.

50% of responses say: It's fine, totally normal, don't worry about it.

50% will says it not normal, but no idea what it is. You'll hear every possible option here is.

Only potentially reported fix is one guy who claims replacing his rear shaft with the updated one and I think extending his rear lower links fixed it.

Other than that, no one has an answer for what it is, what is causing it, or how to fix it that I've seen.

Thank you, that appears to be the noise i have. It doesnt sound destructive I will take it my transmission guy that set my 4runner up to confirm but I havent seen anything yet that talks about transfer case failures, so not real stressed about it.

I think I have what you are describing but I only have it when in 4L. Not temp dependent though.

I’ve had that whine on my 08 since I bought it over three years ago. Mine has 75k on it now. Gets worse in the cold and very loud in Lo

You should double check that the transmission fluid was filled to the correct amount. It's a involved process. So if the fluids were changed by a local shop there is a good chance it wasn't done right. I don't have the link but basically the truck has to be running with the fluid in-between a certain temp and the truck in a certain mode by jumping pins on the obd2 connection. Then filling it up slowly untill fluid drains out of the check drain.

Its 100% normal in 4L.

The gears for 4Lo are straight cut which are stronger but make a whining noise when spinning. Thats totally normal. If its making that in 4Hi I'd suggest you start by replacing your transfer case fluid. Its cheap and for most people its time to do it anyway.

I hear it in 4 hi. Recently purchased vehicle, I'll try replacing transfer case fluid.
