So without going into all the gory details, here's the scenario:

1 - Put transmission in Neutral. Pull transfer case shifter backwards. Feel solid thunk. Something goes buzz and bingo, I'm in Lo range with the little light on the dash. Put it into Drive and away I go.

2 - Put transmission back into Neutral. Push transfer case shifter forward to Neutral. Feel solid thunk. Something goes buzz and bingo, I'm in Neutral.

3 - Transmission in Netural. Push transfer case shifter forward to Hi. Feel less solid thunk. Nothing goes buzz. Put it in drive, and all I hear is gears not meshing together.

Pertinant information:
-I recently purchased the truck. This is the first time I've shifted the transfer case.
-I recently disconnected all the linkage on the transmission and transfer case to pull them for replacing the motor.
-To my knowledge, all wires are plugged back in.
-Front drive shaft is currently out of the vehicle.
-No check engine lights, no codes being thrown.

What do I look at next????

Put the front drive shaft back in or lock the center differential.

I am assuming that the 100 center diff behaves like the 80 series, all wheel drive with unlocked center diff in high and locks the center diff upon being put in low range. Without your front ds installed and center diff unlocked in high range, the power is not being directed to the rear axle.

seems like this would be where the 80 is not entirely like the 100 as some 80s have a viscous coupler too IIRC which would provide some torque, although maybe not a great idea to heat it up too much.
