So I want to lower my crawl ratio, seeing how I can afford what I want right now... I heard a cheaper option to get me closer to where I want is to run a sm420 or sm465? I heard both first gears are 7.06- 1 , and the sm465 is a syncro first gear? Any other major differance?
I found a deal on a sm420 ...
Any input would be great
I am still in my sm420 nightmare... but on that note, the 1st gear on the either is fantastic. I can actually get out while in gear and walk faster than the rig is moving.
From my experience, the cost is in the adapter and driveline modifications. Guy in Hanford can do the rear DL and you can do the front. If I could do it again, I would have saved money just getting the SM420 adapter for my cruiser t-case. It is simple to install but you will have to also modify your tranny hump. Give me a call and I can tell you all the things I learned and what I would do differently.
Not too much difference between the 420 or 465 (at least that you will realy notice) except for the syncro'd gears.

if you are going to drive on the road a lot and plan on not trailering to the trail i would go with a sm465. imho a sm420 is crappy to shift and is a lot noisier. als the prts are a heck of a lot harder to find. the 465 has a little hight first gear 6.8 or something like that but its hardly noticable. i would look for a splitcase out of a fj60 to put in if you are going to buy an adapter. they are so much stronger and quieter. just remember it is more money doing a swap like this than you think and plan for more. i have 2 sm465s in my garage that i would sell ya. one is good the other needs a input becaue the seal surface is messed up. you would need to have the output taken out of the messed up tranny and put in the good one. the out has been drilled for the 465 adapter already. the messed up tranny i had rebuilt judt the surface where the seal goes does not seal so it leaks. i would sell both for $100.
465 is more quiet and parts are easier, but it wasn't too hard for me to find a new top cover. You are welcome to come and drive mine... should be ready by this weekend.
If I was going to go with something else I would go with a np205. Problem is you have a offset rear diff and you would need to change to a center rear diff. Check online and post in the wanted section which adaptor you want I am sure someone has one laying around.
A np205 is pretty much the strongest stock transfer you can get.
Talked to goerg he has an adapter for me, so most likely Casey I'll be makeing a deal with you on the 465's you have..... Man that save $$$& fab wrk to posibly swapping axles and crap.....
