Really a diff and tranny Question ... I was at our local fair yesterday and the toyota people were there with some of thier toys, they had a new 08 fj. while talking to the toyota guy and since i am thinking of adding another fj to the garage. The gentleman told me that the standard transmission when you put the fj in 4 wheel drive, it is always locked, (the front end)however if you go with the automatic transmission then the front is more of a limited slip ? i figure the real answer could be found here ?
So whats up is this true ?
Also he said they are coming out with a removable top fj soon.. is this true ?

Cheers ....

Both version of the fj have the same limit slip front diff( but they do come with different gearing). I think what the toyota rep was saying is the manual fj is all wheel drive which can transfer power from front to back(I believe it transfer up to 60/40) once you shift it to HL it will lock the transfer case to a 50/50 split. The automatic comes with the standard part time 4 wheel drive system 2h for on road and 4h to engage the front end for off road. This is also why the manual gets worst gas milage, because it's always powering the front.

I've heard a lot of people saying they would like a removable top, but I haven't heard anything from Toyota confirming this.

"Torsen limited slip Differential" in the Transfer Case

I'm not terribly experiences as a mechanic (I'm workin' on it, though!) so some of the verbage in the post, below, is beyond me. Suffice it to say that the transfer case in the manual FJ's has, essentially, a limited slip differential that allows you to have full time 4wd. You can put it into 4H (4wd high), 4HL (4wd High and Locked -- as in, lock the transfer case -- wouldn't want to do this on dry pavement!), or 4LL (4wd Low and Locked). I did a little googling and found that the transfer case in the FJ is similar (maybe even the same?) as in some of their other vehicles. Here is a thread at "tacomaterritory.com" -- scroll down to the 5th comment and he has a much better explanation that I gave, here:

Hope this helps!

The transfer case in the 6MT version has a Torsen differential. The 6MT is full time 4wd, when you move the TC into 4H, you lock the torsen in, the same in 4L.

Some might call the 6MT transfer case similiar to quadratrac from 30 years ago in the jeeps or full time 4x4 in the GM products of the same era.
