Greetings all. I'm a IH8MUD virgin, and a new 100 owner to boot (its a 2000 w/ 50K on it). Very happy so far, but do have one nagging concern. Sometimes when shifting into D from R, the tranny makes a dull "thud" noise. It seems to drive fine otherwise. I'm not used to automatic trannys, and I wouldn't give it a second thought except the car has a 30-day warranty and I'd rather have the dealer pay for fixes now than me pay for it next month.

Any words of comfort or concern are appreciated...

I also have a '00

And I do not think mine has ever made that noise. To me, that would be a concern.

I'll check mine out later this morning to verify.

Have you checked the fluid level in the trans? I would also check the driveline/u-joints and grease them. But go easy with the grease gun and don't over do it!

That's what I figured it was. It's only when going into drive from out of R or P. Doesn't slip or knock when shifting at least on mine.

Checked mine. There is a small "thud", but it's no different than any other automatic truck I've driven.

How do you know it's not the normal driveline slack reversing directions?

Gets my vote too. I'd take it and have the driveline lube points greased. May quieten it up a little, plus it may be overdue.

Ditto here. I was guessing (hoping) it was just slack. Thanks for the feedback.

Mine does the same had the driveline greased still does it I think that it could maybe be the u-joints now I will have them checked when I can get her off the road for a day.

I know there were some tranny problems on the early 100s addressed by a TSB. Not sure if the 2000s are included- maybe someone else can chime in.

Are you getting frisky again? :D

Calm down AC.

I'm sure this the typical driveline slack noise that's found in both the 100 and the 80. ;)

No frisk involved, sir. Just trying to help...I forgot what was in the TSB...anyone here remember?

Regardless of what it is, why not have the dealer fix it while you still have the warranty?

Because frequently the dealer "fix" is worse than the problem, and/or they cause collateral damage / other problems. So its best to make sure the problem is really a problem, and really justifies gambling on letting the dealer touch it.

If my tranny makes a dull "thud" noise when shifting into D from R, I would consider that is a problem.

He thinks it's his tranny though some of us believe it's his driveline...cuz they all do it some.
