Hi All!

First of all i would like to apologize to the forum members if this question has been asked already. I did search quite a bit but couldn't find the answer. I am from Mongolia and i own a KZJ78 Land cruiser Prado. It is a 1995 Model with a Manual Transmission (Thank god for it being an MT). I have owned the car for almost 6 months now, and in that 6 months i have managed to put approximately 8 thousand kilometers on it. Lately it has started to become hard to shift into gears. First it started with the 2nd to 3 rd then 3rd to 2nd became tricky now it is quite hard to shift into all gears. Once it is in gears there is no noise or anything. I just came back from a long trip and haven't had the chance to take it into garages, besides i don't trust mechanics over here. Some people told me that my clutch is going out, but i haven't experienced any slippage. Some are saying that it is because of the oil in the tranny. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for any replies from you guys!

It could be the clutch or the oil or the plastic cup and ball joint on the bottom of the gear stick is disintegrating.

Id check the oil first as its the easiest; just undo the drain plug slightly until a dribble of oil starts to come out and check the colour. It should be either red or clear, if its black or brown or looks like there is water in there it needs changing asap.

If the oil is ok try bleeding the clutch system, you could just have air in it and the clutch isnt fully disengaging.

To get to the ball joint you have to remove the centre console trim (if your truck has it) around the the gear stick and remove the rubber boot from the gear stick you should then see 4 bolts holding the joint to the top of the gearbox remove this and inspect, be careful not to drop anything into the box. If it is disinterested youll need to change the gearbox oil too because more than likely some of it fell into the box.

If all the above are ok and it still does it then its time to get the transmission off and check the clutch.

If you do change the gearbox oil you might as well buy enough to do the transfer box and diffs at the same time, then you know its all been done. :)

HTH

Thank you BigDave! I will try to do all of those things over the weekend if time permits. Do you know what could be the code for the tranny and what kind of oil should i use? Thank you again!

OK after letting the KZ sleep in the garage for a while , i finally took it out for a drive today. Here are few more things that i need to fix

1. Sunroof rattle

While on my trip the sunroof had developed a huge rattle. While completely closed the sunroof glass moves up/out . Does anyone know how can i get the glass loose so that i can inspect what is up with it?

2. Tach malfunction

Mr.Tachometer didn't want to let me know whats up with the engine for the first 10 mins until the engine got warm. He just sat there at 0 rpms with no movement at all. Started functioning as usual once the whole car warmed up

3. Still haven't done anything about the gearbox will try to get an oil change tomorrow. BTW does the tranny need to be flushed?

Still waiting for anyreplies from the commenteriat! Please unleash your wisdom!

Sorry, cant help with the sunroof or tach issues but as youve got a manual you will only need to flush it if the oil is really dirty or full of mud/sand/water etc. Id used a fully synthetic gear oil GL-5 SAE75W-90 for the gear box and SAE90 for the transfer and diffs, fully synth is expensive but you shouldnt have to change the oil in the boxes for a long while and it makes the changes much smoother.
