For those interested, a few of us will be taking the train from (Colfax for me) over the Sierra in the snow to Reno on Feb 11 (Sat), spending the night (Silver Legacy for me) and returning on the train Sunday Feb 12. The train leaves various locations (none convenient to Sonoma County) such as Richmond, Sacramento, Roseville and Colfax (12:30) on it's through Truckee to Reno. Most lodging is 1 to 3 blocks from the Reno train station, and the train departs Sunday morning around 8:30.
At this time, one way tickets are just under $50 from what I understand. Lodging is around $75 +/-
I spend the entire trip in the observation car, or very close to the lounge car, with my stuff in a small nap sack that I easily carry.
You can safely park in the Colfax train station parking lot but I cannot vouch for the others. This is a fun and easy way to visit Reno during the winter regardless of the weather or snow conditions and is quite a beautiful ride. Hope to see you on the train!
