Headed to the Tetons to do some climbing later this week. Thought maybe on the way out we would do some 4-wheel exploring. Wondering about trails between Jackson and Ogden. Suggestions anyone?

We took a day to bum around Jackson before we made our attempt at the Grand. I asked around town and we ended up on a pretty little trail north west of town in the Curtis Canyon area. Mostly graded, but did some exploring and found an overgrown fire or logging trail. Tall grass, lots of flowers, beautiful views of the Tetons to the northwest. Got a little rutted and muddy, had to maneuver over a log or two, otherwise a pretty tame trail, but scenic and worth the time.

The climb the next day was a definitely more challenging. Slept in the cruiser and left the parking lot at 4:30 am. We hiked over 18 miles round trip and ascended over 6k', but were unable to summit ; my companion, though a very skilled, sure-footed climber has lived at sea level for the last 6 years and the elevation got to him. He slowed way down. By the time we got to the last 1k' of technical climbing it was 2:00 which is way too late. Got back to the trail head at 7:30, it was a long day. It's the second time that mountain has denied me. The first time my group got caught in a whiteout. Oh well, maybe the third time's the charm...

Sorry to hear about being denied a second time. Made the right call though. I got caught in a massive electrical storm on Death Canyon shelf that lasted 45 minutes. The most scared I have ever been in the mountains.

I climbed the grand a few years ago. Awesome view from the top. Go for the third time, you'll have better luck for sure!

I've been in those canyons during storms, watching lightning dance on the peaks, that is frightening enough. Can only imagine what its like on top. If you ever get a chance check out the collection of climbing gear damaged by lightening on display in the Backcountry Ranger Station at Jenny Lake... very humbling.

Thanks for the encouragement! It's already on the calendar :)
