You also get brake controller wires, and a few extra channels for lights a battery or whatever.

They give you more options. One of my circuits will turn on off road trailer lights for backing the thing up, but it will be controlled from the cab.

I say go for it, you don't need to use any you don want to.

If you don't have brakes on your trailer or electrical accessories then there' s no need for one. If you have electronic brakes (as opposed to surge brakes) you'll have to have a 7-pin for the brake controller in your truck. As stated, it also gives you an electrical connection for an aux battery or other accessories on the trailer.

As stated above, it will give you extra circuits for aux...

I run a six pin and sometimes it isn't enough.

1) Taillights
2) brake lights
3) Left turn
4) Right turn
5) Back-up lights
6) Ground

Notice I have no charge wire in my trailer harness. :frown:

It would be enough if you ran dual filament bulbs instead of separate running, brake and turn bulbs. You could use the wire now in use for brakes for something else.

Yep, but the 40 and the trail trailer both have seperates so instead of changing evrything I'm just adding a 4 pin connector like I use on the front for my drop light/winch controller. Then I can plug my droplight in the rear or plug my trailer aux power in for towing. Don't know that I'll ever need the winch controller plugged in at the rear of the vehicle but I'll have that capability.

if you are adding a trailer connector to your truck, do it once and go with the 7 pin and then you have the ability to do whatever you want with the trailer.

+1. Wire it to the standard rather than a custom job so you can plug into any trailer with out problems.

You can add a simple $10 converter to attach a 6 or 4 pin wired trailer to a 7- pin but not the other way around.
