Am I correct in thinking that the empty connection in the picture which is just to the left of the muffler is the trailer brake light connection? I am sending this from my phone so I hope it works

nobody knows what this connector is for? It is in the rear on the passenger side, just to the left of the muffler.

I think it may be the trailer wiring quick connect. I know there are a couple of open connectors under there, near the muffler, at least there was on mine. I recently purchased the Draw-Tite 4-pin harness for my 98 and I plugged it into one of the connectors in that general location. If you get the Draw-Tite kit, it'll only plug into one connector.

Connector to lead to the 4-pin trailer socket should have 6 pins, but I can't see all the pins on your pic.

As posted, DrawTite or ETrailer should have a harness that plugs into your connector and gives you 4 pins for rear lighting to the trailer. If the trailer needs brakes, you get the brake input lead to the controller from the brake pedal switch.
