Trail suggestions for Painted Hills/John Day area in Oregon

Hi, I was plannning to drive to Fossil, OR (yes, it does have real fossils you can discover behind the town high school), explore the John Day/Painted Hills area next week. Any suggestions for gentle offroading in that area? Stock vehicle with KO2s, off road newbie, with 2 kid family in tow, if that helps.
