Confessional First:

This year I went with the stockers and yes <sigh> there were only a FEW exciting parts for me. Last year I think I ran the same power lines the Intermediate group did with few <sputter> <cough> <cough> < see below> problems and then parked for the gnarly part in the woods.

Rambling Question:

Do I recall that the Stock run was a 2.5 and the Intermediate a 4? If so, am I the only one who might want to see something closer to, say, 3.125 next time?

<See Below> part:

How can you randomly mess up your truck without trying very hard? Discover the (unknown to me) power line grounding wire (1/4 inch or so copper) and get it wrapped around your drive shaft where it filets your ebrake cable and rear diff seal. Grounding wires on power lines- what will they think of next?

We are using the Moab trail rating system,(posted here somewhere)
The trail you ran was rated as "Stock 2.5"
The other trail was rated as "Intermediate 4"
There is Itermediate 1, 2,3 and soforth also, they are 2 totally different ratings.

Yes, I'm sure you would have had more fun on something a bit more challenging, but when I scouted the trail I was looking for something that a large group could run and keep moving.

Lane I think you did a great job picking the Stock trail. It was perfect for people in stock trucks (which mine is) there were times where a couple people required a tug and there was also some rock stacking.

On the other hand I agree with Harry as I have run class VI roads a few times and think that I am ready for something a little more challenging. Now I am temped to make a couple of mods and start running the intermediate trails but I’m tore between spending the money on that or finishing the Cruiser.

The way I see it (and being one of the 2 that needed a tug) if I had good tires installed in a timely fashion, I would had run the intermediate, even with open diffs.

And now, the endorsement: The FJ 40 is made for the trail. I loved the way it handled and felt. I have done similar and harder trails with my FJ60, but the 40 felt really really good.

interesting observation...

there are a lot of class 6 roads which will always be "stock". the intermediate trails that get cut are often cut by jeepsters. if we want more intermediate friendly wagon trail cuts, i think we have to get our wagons out on the trail cuts. would they be accommodating lane?

Trail ratings will always be give-and-take. It will always be a bit harder or a bit easier then what different people in the group want.

Short of a big park like Paragon where there are many, many trails for each level, you just won't find a 100% consistent run.

I though the stocker run on Sunday was PERFECT. It was exactly as advertised, it had a great variety of terrain, a few places that were true challenges for stock trucks, and enough "easy" stuff to let your blood pressure even out at intervals. :)

Heck, thanks to my half-assed efforts, Jason did half of it in 2WD! :)

I wasn't going to mention that Dave :)

When NEA does a trailcut 90% of the people who show up are in a short wheelbase rig.
They cut acording to what they see as being fun.
If you need something wider/larger go on a cut, talk to the trailboss
and get it done!
It's usually only a matter of a tree here or there to make it wagon friendly.

OK,

I guess I'm asking for an Intermediate 1 or 2 next time round...

Does such a thing exist?

Cheers,

HW

That was a great trail for a stock run. Problem with a stock run is you get a mix of truly stock vehicles with something a little more, who are looking for more of a challenge. I'm pretty happy that my completely stock rig did that trail barely spinning a tire. :D

Yeah, I would have been happy doing a bit more, but I'm not so sure that my wife and daughter on their first time out would have felt the same way. The rating and description gave me a pretty good idea of what to expect. :)

I ran the intermediate run at the FG last year when no stockers showed up, and had a great time. Not saying it was a good idea. If say, rain and mud were thrown in the mix , or there weren't go arounds in some spots, I would have made it a very long day for the other folks on the run.:frown:

I'm thinking that next year there will be a call going out for trail leaders.
We will break the group up even more and have different levels going out.
This will mean several guys volunteering to spend a day mapping out a run for his group before the meeting.

I had a great time on the stock run last Sunday. I'm definitely looking forward to more runs with you guys. Speaking of which, is there a 2007 calender up somewhere I can look at for more dates?

seems like trails were adequately rated on sunday
rain/water always bumps them a notch
intermediate 4 was tough, would think rear locker and winch required equipment, armor desirable.
You may want to add a notch if you are driving a wagon, as said befor, small trucks are building the trails, and they like them tight....
we should have rules as to winch/locker requirements for more difficult trails, and stick to the rules, esp with big groups or on extra sloppy days
