i am new to the area, and wanted to get a book or 2 about the trails around AZ. does anyone have any info? I was hoping to pick one up at borders or barnes this week, but did not want to get a book that is known to be useless. I was planning on getting an atlas as well. a gps would be nice, but not in the budget. the books just give an idea as to what to expect on the trail. thanks for any input.

both of these are good for the area, Backcountry Adventures is significantly more mild trails than Wells' book, but also has more trails.

thanks guys. i have the Wells books for colorado, and have used them before. i will look for both next time i am out and about.

I have both and agree. There are also many trails that are not written. Within 15 minutes of my Prescott Valley home are many trails that are unhearlded, yet they are a lot of fun. When my client doesn't want me around early, (which is often) I go and wheel for an hour. On a weekday morning!

Wherever you go in AZ, post up. Locals always know where the fun is! The state is full of old mine- or town-sites worth exploring. Most are on unknown local trails, and most are "members only" as we don't want them littered or closed. We are careful about this info.
