I recently purchased an '83 FJ60 gasser and I know a guy that does a lot of importing from Deutchland. He said that he is looking into bringing in some whole diesel trucks and parts like chassis, engines, trannys and the like. What is Toyota's best diesel engine and will it go into an FJ60? Otherwise, what is the best diesel that can bolt into an FJ60? How hard is that conversion?

I am looking for better gas mileage more than anything else. If a diesel conversion is too pricey, I was thinking that a 305 or V6 Vortec with the NV4500 would be good for gas, hopefully in the high teens and low 20's on the freeway.

Search, lots of info in the diesel section here

Most will say the 1HD-T but they are wicked pricey, You can put the 4 cyl 3B or the 6 cyl 2H diesel that was available to North America for parts availabilty.

sell your gasser and buy one of the diesel rigs he's bringing in.... it would be cheaper than doing a swap.

I heard the same thing from a friend. He said that the 1HDT was the 'Holy Grail' of Toyota's diesel motors, but didn't really say why. Do they have gobs of HP and torque and get awesome mileage? Is a swap as reasonable as... well say a 12HT? I have heard that the 12HT can get up to 25 on the freeway. Does the 1HDT compare?

Regarding the 12HT, how difficult is it to install into a gasser? I am thinking it would be fairly basic bacause it will use a lot of the same stuff in the American 60's, and also the HUGE advantage of no smog, but are there any hurtles that cannot be cleared without making some costly purchases at Toyota?

I have driven a 60 with the 12HT and it is like nothing I have ever experienced. Is it the sound, I don't know. The torque? Its hard to say. I think what it comes down to is the adverturer in every man.

After breaking it up and examining the facts one comes to find that diesel power (aside from the obvious advantages like fuel economy, low end power and 'feel') is glorious and predictable in its fundamentals and tends to draw in the tinkerer, the perfectonist and the professional.

I know now why we desire 'the rest of the story', the obtained unobtainable; We desire it because we need to have the best, and will stop at nothing to get it, so long as it is in our means, and sometimes when it isn't. Maybe when I grow up one day I'll understand better, but at this point I am just going to get it and enjoy every minute of it!

So being that the 12HT seems to the the most feasable and provides enough power, I will go with that provided I get the opportunity.

I get the 60 tomorrow, and the first thing on the list is get it to pass smog so I can start driving it. I figure that I'll check and tune-up of the plugs and wires, cap and rotor and inspect of the smog pump. From there I'll drain the old gas, change the fuel filters, and trow in some Marvle Mistery Oil, run it HOT and pull it into the smog station for a diagnosis. Hopefully all goes well.

From there I am going to just focus on getting things back to stock working condition being that the truck has 240K+ and most likely needs some things replaced/maintainanced.

This forum has to be the most useful source of TLC information I have ever found. Great job putting it all together.

i think any parts that you have to buy for the diesel will be costly. I'm not 100% sure but i think since the diesels weren't available in the USA you cannot buy diesel parts in Toyota Dealerships here in the US, could be wrong though.
