Gl4 should be fine in my opinion. It's also the specified lubrication for the transmission as well as the transfer case both of which see long continued high pressure use. That said given the robustness of the winch you could probably run it packed full of butter.....

I'm joking of course but what I'm trying to say is- just about any gear oil would probably give you a lifetime of daily service.

I am stripping down an toyota 80 mechanical winch .
it was not used for a very long time .
to the point that it was still full of clear honey color oil.
the upper part , not in contact with oil has some points of RUST !
the oil I dripped out had the thickness of honey , certainly not a gear W90 oil .
most probably the W 640 , that another member was saying .
