Finally got around to ordering new windshield and seals for the 40. Sick of wipers not laying flush on the lexan windshield.

Anyway, did online requests from Doenges, Riverside and Toyota of Muskogee. Toyota of Muskogee responded the quickest and gave a price of $118.32, which didn't seem bad. Doenges was higher at $169.44. Riverside never gave a price online, had to call them, and they were the highest at $180.52. I told them I got 118 from Muskokee and would drive down there to save 60 bucks. They came down to 114.87, but then when I asked for the windshield seal they said they needed my VIN # to tell which part to use (the one for a FJ55 or an FJ40). I told them it was an FJ40, but they still couldn't figure it out. I called Jim Norton - really not wanting to go to have to go to Muskogee. They were $155.39, and after talking to the manager, they came down to $143.50. For $25, I'm still willing to drive to Muskogee just on principle.

Funny thing is when I called up Muskogee to order the parts, I talked to a different guy, and he gave a higher price. I said whoa, I got this price and this price in an e-mail. Well apparently the other guy - Ron, gave me the wholesale price. I'm good with that, since they're honoring it.

Toyota of Muskogee answered first with the lowest price, so I guess good service is worth a little drive - plus gives me an excuse to go to camp gruber again.

Heath,

I was thinking that Toyota had discontinued the early 70s FJ40 model windshields, because after you broke the one I sold you, I checked with TOD, and they said discontinued. But I only checked for a 71 FJ40, not a 73 FJ40. Let us know if you actually acquire one and have it in hand. Plus, a part number would be handy, as I plan on buying an extra just to have a spare.

I picked it up last Thursday. Ron at Toyota Muskogee was super nice. I told him he had the best price, good enough to make the trip down there. He said he isn't rich either and knows how important a fair price is.

When I got home I put it up against the windshield frame, and it sure looks right. I'll give you the part # once I put it in and it's right - I'm assuming it is since the seal fits. I put the rubber seal on Friday. Pain in the but. It isn't really shaped like a windshield if you know what I mean. It's not really shaped at all - not like the seals on the hard top. Just getting the rubber on the windshield took an hour. I finally broke down and started taping it on. I put a section on, then put tape over it to hold it on, then go a little further and do the same thing. Otherwise, I'd get to the second corner, and the corner I started with would come off. Not in a huge rush, since the vehicle is waiting for caster shims and U-bolts to come in today to be driveable. So I just put the windshield with the seal taped to it on the bed in the spare bedroom. I'm hoping that after sitting in that possition for a week, the seal will take a set to that shape and make getting it in the frame easier.

Heath, I certainly know what you're going through trying to install a new OEM window weatherstrip on a windshield. It's a royal pain the the you know what! Bret and I have installed a couple of new windshields with new weatherstrip in our FJ40s, and it's definately a two person job. Hopefully you can get your neighbor (or maybe your wife) to help you when you install. Frankly, when I was going through putting all the new glass and new weatherstrip in my 71 FJ40 that I was restoring, I decided my time was better spent doing things I'm faster at, so I went ahead and paid an auto glass installer to put the windsheild, and one side window in. When I repainted my 87 FJ60, I had learned my lesson and I went ahead and had a glass installer install all the glass. It was worth the $200 I paid for that job. According to the paint shop owner, even the glass installer had difficulty putting the FJ60 windshield in, with the new rubber.

If the glass works, save the plastic bag if you don't mind, and bring it to the picnic, as I'd like to take it to TOD to see if it can be ordered.

Well, it looks like it's not the right glass.

I tried putting it in, with the rope trick and the wife's help, but no dice. Then I took the glass and held it up to the frame, there is about twice the gap top to bottom as there is left to right - no way the rubber will fit since it's the same size all the way around.

Really trying to get ready for the picnic, so I think I'm going to go with safelite or something https://www.safelite.com/sslPages/repairReplace.jsp

If anyone has a good place to go in Owasso or Tulsa (owasso would be nice since the glass is out right now - though I guess I could take the windshield frame in), I' be glad to hear it..... oh, and if anyone needs later model glass, let me know before I return it and I'll bring it to the picnic.

Well, that sucks! I was hoping you found a Toyota source for the early 70s FJ40 windshield. They definately sold you a later model windshield, so take it back to them. You shouldn't have too much difficulty getting a auto glass place to cut you a new windshield. Let us know how much it costs when you get it done.

Sucks is kinda the word I was thinking of too.

I scheduled safelite to do it tomorrow. I was kinda surprised they could do it that quick - said they could do it this afternoon if I brought it in, but I don't feel like driving that far with no windshield. I'll let ya' know tomorrow if it works out and what the total is - they quoted $183 plus tax.

At least I got my castor shims and new frame side spring bushings on Saturday - so the weekend wasn't a total loss. Really wanted to drive it with the castor shims in (6 deg) and see what it was like. The wander didn't bother me that much below 70, I just didn't like that I couldn't flat tow it.

Just to be safe, I'm ordering a couple of windshields from Toyota for the early 60s FJ40. I just found out that they're still available for about $50 each. This situation of Toyota discontinuing the early 70s FJ40 windshields (I must have bought the last one for my 71), has got me thinking to buy what's available now, rather than waiting until I actually start restoration process, whenever that will be!

Had a peice cut to fit at Edmond Glass took them my 40 and the new /used barely rubber.Installed in about an hour for I think 70 bucks. Well worth it.Bud is the owner,Great Guy!!!!

Darrel, I wonder if Bud can cut some FJ40 windshields if I bring him a pattern? I know that I got approached at the raffle at least once asking if I had any windshields for early 70's FJ40s, and I of course didn't. I'd like to get at least two spares for myself.
