I normally post stuff to my build thread, Rockcrawler to Overlander, but this is more of a 4Runner or Land cruiser thing.

Here is a Toyota 8.2 out of 5th gen 4runner I had laying around (never owned a 4Runner) and a Toyota 9.5 out of a 200 series land cruiser.

So when you have 1,500 lbs of bumpers, skids, mud tires, fridge, roof top tents, water, fuel, food, recovery, clothing, and people. Be happy you have a rear end that is up to the task.

That's some serious additional BEEF.

I have a 200 and the wife has a new 5th gen 4Runner and you can see and feel these differences everywhere. It is a good truck but let's remember, two 4Runner's for the price of one 200 new. The saying is true, you get what you pay for.

They are both great trucks.

So true.

That 9.5 vs. 8.2 photo would be a great answer to the hoards of critics who say the LC is an overpriced, glorified mall cruiser...

For that matter... I would LOVE to see a comparison with a 4-wheel-drive Highlander...and have THAT photo on hand for when people STILL throw down the "bloated Highlander" comment (and ya, I still occasionally hear this ignorant line...).

The 9.5 vs. Highlander comparison would surely be laughable. ;)

Thanx for the pics, Taco. Since I already respect the 4runner, that makes it even better cruiser porn!

Just stumbled on this. Before you get too excited, remember that those "monster" differentials came stock on FJ40s, FJ60s, FJ62s and it came at both ends of the truck! What I want to see in a Cruiser is the 10.5 differential out of a new Tundra.

Good point, but remember, the 9.5" has been seriously updated over the years. It's a far cry from the early FJ40. Someday in the not too distant future, we will be chopping up 200 Series and building silly things from them. Some will have 600 hp supercharged engines, turning 40" + rubber... And the limits will be found. Then we can start building those 10.5"ers. Here is the 10.5 next to the FZJ80 9.5".

I thought it important for future posterity that I should point out that the smaller 3rd pictured in this thread is not a Toyota 8.2 from a 5th gen Toyota. The 8.2 is a shim adjusted 3rd, the one pictured above is the 8 with the typical threaded side adjusters like you would see in the older Toyota 4Runner like 2003 to 2009... I have uploaded a picture of the 3rd from my 2017 4Runner. This is what you see in the 2010 to present 4Runner, 2010 to 2014 FJ Crusier l, and the 2010 and up Parado. I recently installed a ARB RD 193 and you should be able to clearly see the differences between an actual 8.2 and the one previously posted picture.

Another difference is the 8 is a 10 bolt ring gear, and the 8.2 is a 12 bolt. The 8.2 has much beefier caps and other reinforcements. The 8.2 is beefier then the older 8 and the 8.2 seems to hold up pretty well compared to the older 8. The 200 series Crusier is bigger being that it's a full size vs midsize SUV. Another shot of the 8.2 from another angle...

That diff came out of an 2014 bone stock 4Runner. I did it myself. It’s an e-locker diff. Looks like you have an open diff 8.2 (which is obviously not the same). That one I had also has 12 ring gear bolts, seeing as how I put it in a buddies 2014 FJ when he blew up his R&P.

I don't believe the 8.2 is actually 8.2 inchs, it's still an 8 inch ring gear but with 12 bolts. They just call it the 8.2 to differentiate from the older...

There was like 10mm bigger ring gear. But it’s still too small. Toyota made it a bandaid fix for the Prado 150 platform, but knew it just needed to be replaced. Which is why it didn’t move onto the new Tacoma, instead making the 8.75” which is actually stronger.

Clearly mine is an open diff, hence the installation of the ARB. Yes, you right it is a 12 bolt. I pointed that out. But, I wanted to show what an actual 8.2 is. The picture you posted was not an 8.2. I know that may seem like a small thing, but for anyone interested in an 8.2... you have an 8 pictured, not an 8.2

Then how did it fit in a 8.2 housing, and not an 8” housing?

Size is relative, sure bigger and stronger is always nice. But the 4Runner weighs about 2000 lbs less then the 200 series so it's not a accurate 1 to 1 comparison. The axles under a 4Runner are reasonably strong, they hold up fine it you don't push too far beyond its design limits.

I don't know what your asking here...

I don't really see why you want to argue about this. The one I have pictured is an 8.2, the one you have pictured is not. Thats all I am talking about. It's not complicated.

If your asking why the e-locker one is different, well yes it is. The elocker one and the 8.2 is not the same thing. Hope that clears things up...

Wasn't comparing to a Land Cruiser, was comparing to the Tacoma, which is why I said "8.75"

8.2 open and 8.2 e-lockers are different parts and different housings that are not interchangeable. They also look different. The diff pictured is an 8.2. It came from an 8.2 housing, it went into an 8.2 housing. It did not fit into an 8" housing. It has 12 ring gear bolts, not 10. I'm not trying to argue, but you have a completely different axle assembly than what is pictured, but they are the same R&P, and as such, an 8.2.

So to respond like you did, it’s not complicated, hope that clears things up.
