Hey guys, I'm moving in a couple weeks, and debating renting a Uhaul truck, or a Uhaul trailer and using the LX to tow. I know our trucks are pretty great for the purpose, but mine is a '98 with 360,000 km (223,693 miles) on it (and the AHC) I've never towed with it, and I'm the fourth owner. I know the previous owner also never towed, but I'm not sure about those before him. Thoughts on wether a vehicle with that many miles on it is up to the task? Would I be further ahead renting the Uhaul truck, once you factor wear and lowered mpg? The trip will be from Thunder Bay to Ottawa, a distance of about 1500 km (932 miles), with some pretty hilly sections along the north shore of Lake Superior.

Thanks!

I assume it is only you (i.e. one person), if you are thinking a Uhaul trailer will fit all your stuff. If that is the case, I would tow, assuming your rig is well-maintained and in proper working order. Those trailers aren't that big. Even so, it will be a long slow trip. Plan well and take extra time.

On the other hand, if you happen to have a :princess: with you, you might consider renting a truck and have :princess: drive your rig unladen.

I do have a :princess: with me, but we're not taking much furniture with us really, as we're going to rent out our current home furnished; so I think the Uhaul 6X12 would fit everything. She needs to drive her car down though, as it's very fuel efficient and ideal for the city. I'm contemplating leaving the LX in Tbay for awhile, as I'm going to be flying back and forth for work pretty regularly. But, I don't really NEED it there as Tbay is easy to get around without a car... I also don't really NEED it in Ottawa, as one car is enough. So, I'm debating the pros and cons... Mostly, I want it in Ottawa, because I love it... More than anyone should probably love a vehicle... Obviously anyone on this forum understands that.

I have pulled the same size trailer with a V6 '99 RX300. No hills to speak of but it did nicely with household goods for just over 300 miles on two separate trips. The dual axles on the trailer make it much better for towing.

Should not be a problem for your LX if you decide to use it. Household goods are not that heavy to begin with and you could use the space in the LX to pack clothes and other stuff.

If your truck has been properly maintained miles are irrelevant. The LX should tow that with no problem. The hills along the north shore aren't that big.

@Tbay LX
Be sure the taillight converter box is good on your truck. There was a recall on '98-99s that went bad because of moisture = no brake lights on trailer and no rental.

Same happened to me first time I tried to tow. Lights partially worked (think running lights and no brake lights). There is a good write up in how to splice a new controller. Agree, if your 100 is running, should tow like the rest of them.

Like the man said, hook it up, drive reasonably, and go. Don't second guess yourself. You know it will be fine.
