Anyone had any experience with a tow reciever mounted D shackle?

I have 2 love... great to know that the strap isnt comi off

they are great. i don't even think mine are rated (which all shackles should be weight rated so you can make sure they're strong enough) and they've still worked great.

I'm curious if one of these is a better alternative to just attaching the tow strap to a strong hitch pin in the reciever

wheres a good place to buy schackles and clevices?

Yes and no.

Yes because they allow the strap to pull at an angle without subjecting them to the sharp corner of the trailer socket.

No because they introduce more failure points.

Yes because the strap just on a hitch pin has the potential to bend it, where the shackle slider can only put the shear load in the pin that it was designed for.

No because anything larger than a 2" strap will not fit into the trailer hitch without considerable difficulty.

This has been working for me. I have several spare receiver hitches, got the high load shackle at a tractor supply. Yeah, at the angle it's at not under load it looks like it could bend or bind. Nope straightens up and pulls. I had it on one that had less drop but I don't think the hitch will fail either. Of course it is my rear recovery point for the rig. Lost the tow hook when I put the hitch on the rig.

(NO it is not pinned in place, just stuck it in for the photo. It's back in the cargo box now..thanks anyway for your alert observation)

Thats all I use for a rear recovery point . I have a proper ( not that theres anything wrong with HighDs) reciever mounted d-ring attachment point, but have seen many use High Ds idea.

I have also seen a strap snap when using only a pin in the reciever, as mentioned earlier it pulled against the square side of the reciever & broke..not a cheap strap either.

Just use a piece of 2 inch square tube (3/16 or 1/4 inch wall section). Drill a hole for the receiver pin and one for the shackle. It costs about nothing and works great. I have these on several rigs and a couple on the shelf to swap back and forth too.

Mark...

I was pulling out a tree with my crusier and i hooked the chain on the front hook bent the metal :grinpimp:that it bolted to so i i turned around hooked up on to the ball lots of tire schreeching got the tree out, walked around back looked at the ball and hitch it was bent down moral of the story dont use piece of s*** reese hitches from walmart hitches to take out trees or other stuff:hillbilly: or heeps

Man you lucky the ball didn't break off and shoot outta there like a cannon shot. Really surprised the ball DIDN"T break before bending the hitch?
