Hey Y’all,

I’ve added a Curt hitch and 2” shackle hitch receiver to my 2004 GX470 for recovery purposes. However, I’d like to have the option to tow if I need to.

My 2004 is February production. I know there’s a cutoff in 2004 where some of tow parts changed over. I read this post over on ClubLexus, and I pulled together the following parts list. Want to make sure I’m not missing anything before ordering.

Does this look right?
  • under hood relay x2
  • Wiring harness x1
  • Relay in trunk / near driver rear tail light x1
    • 81985-60021
    • This is the one I’m unsure about. I can’t find where it would plug in, and I’ve opened the area where the jack goes and pulled back the trim panel (see pictures below)
  • Not required, but I want to test the harness and make sure everything works…

If your truck has the factory towing package you'll have a 7 pin connector under the back bumper on the drivers side. If not this might help

Hm, I have the 2 plugs in the rear near where the spare tire goes, but I don’t think I have the towing package. The container for the 2 towing relays under the hood is empty.

Based on the thread you shared it seems like some folks need to order that relay for the rear, but others don’t. I’ll pull the trim panel entirely off later tonight and check for a receiver for that relay.

Has anyone ever installed a new style "in-bumper trailer plug harness" similar to this thread on our GX470's? I have ripped off the below bumper mount too many times and want to find a better solution. It looks like there is room in the bumper skin on the driver side to cut a hole to mount a new flush mounted trailer plug harness. The thread I linked above has something that I think would be a relatively easy job, but I wanted to check to see if others have done it.
