In an effort to have the most modern drivetrain platform for Landcruiser Enthusiasts Torfab developed an adapter in house for our conversions to install a GM Gen V 6.2/5.3L LT V8 motor into an 80 series in the factory engine mount location without any modifications to the drivelines or need for welding on the Toyota frame. With our adapter kit you keep the engine/trans into the stock frame brackets and stock t-case crossmember, and also allows the stock drivelines to be used. This simplifies your engine placement and location mounting with out needing to worry about drivelines and make it a bolt in process. We are now offering this as a kit for other builders and enthusiasts to do their own conversions.

The kit will include:

  • * OEM Toyota Engine Mounts
  • * Engine mount adapter brackets (mounts to the LT motor and allows Toyota 80 series engine mounts to bolt in factory frame location)
  • * Torfab Adapter for the GM Trans to HF2A/HF2AV transfer case
  • * Transmission shifter linkage (this will adapt the 8/10 speed transmission to your stock 80 Transmission Shift Lever (P-R-N-D-2-L)
  • * Transfer case shifter adapter bracket. (This bracket allows you to mount the early 80 transfer shift lever to the GM transmission in the stock location without modifying the body.)
The kit will require the following:

  • * Early 80 (91-94) transfer case shifter base (retainer and shaft). If you have a 95-97 you will need to source this part. PN: 36344-60021
  • * Factory adapter/extension housing from A343 transmission 1995-1997 and 6 mounting bolts (this can be used from old drivetrain or source a used one). PN: 35015-60070
  • * GM LT Motor L83/ L84/ L86/ L87
  • * Factory GM 4WD 8 or 10 speed transmission (8L90 or 10L80/90)
  • * HF2A and HF2AV Transfer case
This kit will not have:

*
Electrical components or support around how to get your conversion to work. As a small shop we focus on producing parts that will aid in completing a conversion project and producing high quality Land Cruiser conversions. Due to this we are not able to field questions around electrical/wiring components or programming for conversions.

We have them available for sale now via our website for $2630 with free shipping.

If you are curious about the benefits of LT engine and transmission we have a video of Tor's thoughts on the advantages of the drivetrain.

Beautiful work, gentlemen.

Beautiful build! I had originally been planning an LS3 swap into my FJ62 but since the 80 sees more highway miles it might make sense to pursue this swap instead... and then put the 1FZ-FTE into the 62 🤔

@NookShneer - A few questions that come to mind:
  • I'm assuming your adapter requires the trans output shaft to be cut/chamfered just like the other adapters out there?
  • Any experience using this kit to put an LT1 into an 80 rather than the L86/87? Curious if it required new headers or any other differences from the L87...
  • Looks like you're running electric fans on that white 80? I know yall have built your own custom electric fan shroud in the past, is this one of those as well?
  • What ECU are you running on that white 80? OEM GM?
  • Any plans to release a bracket for mounting the throttle pedal?
I tried to find more details on that build but couldn't come up with much. It looks like it came out perfect.

I will likely go with a <100k mile L87/10L80 combo from a 2018 Escalade or similar because the L87 seems like a better fit for the 80, but the allure of a totally new Connect & Cruise LT1 package from GM (especially with the warranty) is very tempting since it is fortunately within my budget. I would likely go with this kit if I go that route: LT1 Wet Sump Automatic Connect & Cruise Powertrain System W/ 10 Speed - https://www.gmperformancemotor.com/parts/CPSLT110L90E.html

@haulin auss

1. The adapter doesn't need the output shaft trimmed, just needs to be a 4wd transmission
2. We have installed this kit with an LT1 and 8 speed as well as 10 speed. You can modify the LT1 manifold or you can install hooker manifolds.
3. We use a SPAL PWM fan which is controlled by a separate unit measuring the temp coming out of the rad and has AC pressure override.
4. The E92 ECU is what's running the white 80 in the video, it is controlled as if it's a L86 and 10 speed. We have used an E90 ECU as well, but it's way more work to get it running, but the trans control with the T93 with E90 ECU is WAY better
5. We have a throttle pedal bracket, just contact us and we can help with it

I have the L87 and 10 speed in my personal 80 and it's friggen amazing. The E90 is something I won't install in a customers truck because it leaves a CEL on all the time. You can run the L87 with the E92 ECU and a T87a trans controller, but you need to get an older 10 speed trans due to the controllers and the later model having an aux pump and extra shift solenoid. I'm probably divulging too much insider info here, but oh well. These issues are pretty finicky to get over, which is why it just makes more sense to go with an LT1 and 8/10 speed direct from GM.

Generally speaking any year gen V will work, but do your homework on electronics because they are different. We find that any of the truck 4wd versions with 8/10 speed transmissions will fit best, because of the oil pan design, etc.

Is there concern since LT’s are direct injected with carbon buildup on intake side of the heads? How stellar have the 8 and 10 speeds been? (asking out of ignorance since I don’t have a reason to frequent GM truck forums, but with great interest as I’m seriously considering a repower of my LX, or going to the dark side with a G500)

These engines haven't suffered from the same level of valve gunk as other DI engines. If it does need a cleaning, then the intake manifold can be taken off in about an hour to clean the valves. The 8 speed had a shudder which was fixed with a tune update (Recall) from GM, and the 10 speed so far doesn't seem to have any issues. I have about 20k on my personal conversion running the 10 speed and all our other Gen V conversions have been completely reliable.

Looked around and seems like this kit can be used with a stock height cruiser (refreshed springs, not sagging) ?? @torfab
