For those that have been around our 80, know how bad the exhaust leak was between the two cats. I bought the gasket/seal but when I went to install it, found one of the weld-nuts was gone. So, I ignored it since I don't drive it, the girls do.

In another thread, I've also discussed the CEL code, discovering that it was from the O2 sensor after the cats. Before I invested time into changing that, I thought it a good idea to give it a trip to Henry's Muffler and talk with Donald about a solution.

I wanted to eliminate one of the cats since the new cats are more efficient, smaller and should be able to handle the I6's emissions. I knew that when I built some sliders for it, I'd have to accommodate the mess of the two cats.

So, this is what we came up with, one new cat, both old ones gone, new Magnaflow muffler and routing everything out of the way as much as possible. Total with parts and labor = $400, not bad for a fresh cat, muffler and tubing IMHO.

Now for the pics...

Nothing fancy, no go fast chrome tip, just function. I'm tempted to cut it off at the frame but for the time being, with the girls using it as their daily driver, it will stay...

How does it sound now ?

Also not too sure here, but might want to ask a vehicle inspector before you cut it off. Not too sure what the rules are for the exit of exhaust for inspection purposes are. I cut my old one at the frame for the bumper but have been dreading the day i go for an inspection.

Where did you go to get it done? I was going to make a tailpipe myself, but if I can have a shop bend up what I want, that would be better.

I'm not sure either and don't plan on trimming in the near future if ever. At the most, I may trim it level to the ground.

Hate to say I like it, nice and growly on the low end. Merging onto the freeway, I had the room to floor it up the on-ramp. Sounded really nice under the load, not loud to me from the driver's seat. Yet, I've not been driving a normal sounding 80 since I've owned it.

Henry's Muffler had two locations, I've only had work done at the one on Millbrook Rd in Raleigh. Donald has done 3 exhausts for me and I've been happy how each has come out.

Raleigh's Custom Exhaust Shop Since 1998

Its not too far off the inner belt line (440), takes me ~30 min from Cary...

Jerry, you are the man. That's twice this week you've pointed me in the right direction, thank you!!

Good old carolina clay..... takes a day to get it of and 10 seconds to get it back on

Looks good. One question, did you look at / could he have gone over the frame like the earlier years do?

My understanding is the earlier ones had side by side cats and it went over the frame. The later ones had 2 cats inline and that made it too long to go over in the same opening. My '97 still has the space above the frame where it would have gone.
I'm hoping to run a single cat and go over the frame at some point.

You can definitely go over the frame - my EMS exhaust does.

After seeing and hearing the exhaust over at Jerry's, I am mighty impressed! They did a great job for a great price and it sounds fantastic.
