I've just realized that the past owner at on point cut the smog tube that comes out of the smog pump and with a body lift installed its too short. Which lead me to ask why do I need all this stuff under the hood. Is there a benefit to desmogging or not?

Hey I kinda asked the same question as mine is going out... check out the thread on page 2 "FJ60 bad smell" you might find an ansere to your question.

just desmogged my 85....took everything off...if your going to do it...i reccomend picking up a header...it made it go alot easier...i even pulled the cat off...some say it doesnt help much...i disagree...mine runs alot smoother...and way more responsive...im sure the header and removing the cat helped a bit more...but once you get into it its not much more work...one piece of advice, take your time and do it right remove everything and start from scratch...there is some good references out there

good luck

Are you in a pollution control state/ area? That's the first question to ask yourself. If not look thru past threads on desmogging. I think Jim C. has posted some vac line outlines to do it right. There are also some threads on european vac routing.

One problem with desmogging is that you will develope detonation at times. Normally the EGR will mix exhaust gases with the incoming mixture and "cool" the mixture, but with the EGR unhooked it can't do this. It's not bad detonation, but definetly there. Only two ways to correct this is to back the timing off, which hurts power and mpg or to get the dizzy recurved to basically euro specs.

i desmogged my '84 60. put a header from maf on. kept the cat. runs much better..
