Just bought a 72' FJ 40. EVERYTHING is there and works. No rust (No...seriously). Stock 3speed and stock F motor. Stock winch, bench seats, etc.. Paid 6K for her.

Been redoing the 60. Rebuilt the knuckles (What a friggin' pain). New PSP, New Alternator, new radiator. Interior is all there and everything works. Only surface rust behind the mudflaps. All stock 2F, 4speed, stock suspension, etc..

To keep the 60, I have to finish the suspension (OME...2K), and paint her. I WANT to put in Ramjet 350 and NV4500.

Both will cost me the same to put it where I want it to be. My gut tells me the 60 won't give me my money back when I dump the b*tch. The 40 is a much rougher ride and loud as hell but hey..it's a 40.

What would you guys do?

I just switched from a 40 to a 60. As a daily driver I wouldnt think twice about it again. If it wasnt my daily I'd have kept the 40. I loved that damn rig... Will you have a higher likelyhood of getting more money out of the 40, yes. By the time you do all you want to do to the 60, you will never get all of your money out. I somehow got every dime, including gas and oil when I sold mine, but I initially traded it for a car I had only $2800 into. Did I mention I loved that 40...

It depends on what you want to do. The 60 is better in nearly every measurable way. It has a better motor, a better tranny, and way better transfercase, better brakes, power steering, airconditioning, decent seats and can actually carry additional gear and people. It can go anywhere you will care to go, almost....

The FJ40 is wonderful in rocks, where the trail is tight and close manouvers are called for. The rest of the time, the FJ40 is hard to live with. It's lound, bouncy, often hot and crude. If you have more than one passenger, they will be hating life. You will have a tough time taking taking gear and food for a 3-4 day trail, but if all you do is one day runs you'll be fine. It sucks as a daily driver, unless your drive is just a few miles.

If you can drive the FJ40 as basically an occasional toy, then keep it and enjoy. If you have to live with it day to day, then an FJ60 is the clear choice. In my family, the FJ60 is the dog hauler, Home Depot runner, camping truck, and my usual commuter. My FJ40 lives in the Garage and gets out for 3-4 trips a year to places like Rubicon and Dusy-Ershim.

Cruiserdrew is right on. The 40 and 60 serve different missions and you'll need to decide what yours it.

Also, except for unsual circumstances you'll never get your monwy back on any cruiser you fix up so that really shouldn't be part of the decision process. Don't mean to rain on your parade but that's pretty much the way it is.

Loved my 60, then thought about selling my 60, then had I had the engine rebuild. Thou it was pricey, it was still a lot cheaper than getting another vehicle. and now I've fallen in love again.:)

I feel your pain.

I recently bought a 60. I told the wife that I wanted to sell my 40 and get a 60 so we would have enough room to use it like it should be. With the 40 it was always to cramped to do much more that a day trip.
Now that I have both. The wife dosen't want me to sell the 40. She likes it during the summer with the top off and says that I've worked to long and hard on it to sell it. Problem is to get the 60 where I would like it, I need the money from the 40.

I'm in a similar dillema-the 40 and 60 both need stuff, but i can only afford to do one at a time. I tried selling the 60 once, but when it wouldn't sell, took that as a sign to keep it. It hasn't moved in over two years, but I know it'll be ready when the time comes. When the 40 is done, the 60 will get some TLC!!

Keep The 40 And Get A M416 Trailer So Your Not Cramped And Have Room To Put All Your Stuff. Fj40's Rule

As a man with both a 40 and a 60, do what you can to keep them both. My 40 sat for 2 years with storage insurance and the 60 is my DD. I work on the 40 when time and $$$ permit. My wife will never let me sell the 40 because she wouldnt be able to live with me being remorseful over it.

If you cant keep both, keep the 60. It will serve your needs as well as the 40 with more cargo area and creature comforts.

Update on selling the 40 or the 60.

Ok...

Can't get rid of the 60 cuz it fits a lot o's***e in it from Home Depot. Keeping the 40 as well cuz I finally fit in the third garage. Funny how just making room for the 40 put everything into perspective. The 40 is safely tucked away into the garage so I can work on her at will (She needs absolutely NO work...I'm just anal. Sandblasting rust off of screws kind of anal). The 60 is in the driveway calling out an OME and 33"'s!

Gonna keep both. Neither are DD. Use the Honda for work. The Harley for getting smokes at the gas station and the H2 when we take the kids out for the weekend. Tough life I know!

Wife thinks I am crazy.

One thing that would complet the 60 is to put a V8 in her. Rocky Mountain Cruisers here in Colorado has a Ramjet crate motor for 5 grand and then the cost of installing it and lines and parts and tranny and stuff equals more dough. He won't take a wrecked Chevy and pull the motor. I guess it's good he does quality work but geez...I just want someone that's done it before that will charge me whatever to install a V8 (2 grand used?) and then a tranny (NV4500?) for another $1,500. Any of you Rising Sun guys in the Springs up for it?

Both stay now and I'm happy about it but I don't want to let the 60 sit without upgrades! I don't have the skillz to pull a motor and trans and replace it. Good running 2F for free with tranny to anyone that will install the V8 and tranny that I buy for her.

"She likes it during the summer with the top off and says that I've worked to long and hard on it to sell it. " Gotta love a wife who likes the top off!
