"The quality of the materials used in the ANC sample were close to those of the Craftsman bag in both the canvas of the bag and the strap handles. The zipper is not quite as sturdy as on the Craftsman; the stitching is not the greatest on either. The outside compartments are plentiful, and most look quite functional. That is one of the major things the Craftsman bag does NOT offer.
The utility of the outside storage would depend a lot on the buyer's intended use. I use the storage pockets on my FJ Cruiser bag a lot, and for stashing electronic components and travel-related items because it is a MUCH STURDIER bag that I feel I can trust not to get things easily crushed if something bumps into it. The ANC is nowhere near that sturdy.
Beyond that, my first criterion for all of my bag purchases is whether or not I can lay a 30' towstrap in the bottom of the bag. The strap barely fits in the Craftsman bag; it has a little more room in the ANC bag. I can fit my recovery gear [strap, gloves, clevis, snatch block and hitch pin, easily into a bag. A second, comparable bag, carries a deluxe tire patch kit, can of fix a flat, deluxe tire guage and the coiled air hose and pressure regulator for the CO2 tank. I consider these both to be excellent uses for these types of bags.
The one advantage to the ANC bag for tool storage that I can see at this point is that it is a little shorter in height, which would make it easier to stow under a seat or other cargo area. I have to flatten the Craftsman bags slightly to get them under a wheelwell high deck I fabbed up in the back of the 40.
Hope this helps
