IH8 to do this but....School me on MC tires.


I don't know squat about motorcycle tires. I want to get rid the "Death Wings" I have, and plus I'll be needing new tires soon anyway.

I am under the assumption that the 15" rim (I think) has limited aftermarket support. It seems to be an un-common rim size.

Also, I'm wanting to go more in the "Motard" direction, rather than dual, or just off-road. My reasoning is, there's only two wheels? How hard can it be to have a set of knobbys in the corner for off-roading. And a set of streets for on-roading? How hard is it to change out wheels on a motorcycle?


What are some good brands? How can I tell? Are there rating #'s like there are on car tires that I can use?

All types please. Whatever you have experience with, just let me know.

How, and where do you order rims for motorcycles?
 
Swapping is easy if you have a complete second set. My XR has knobbies for dual/off road, and I bought a used set of rims on eBay and set them up with a studded set for winter. 10 minutes swap operation.

Still should have a second brake disc so I don't have to remove the 4 bolts each time, but a 10 second deal, really. Swapping studded tires is no fun when your hand slips and runs across 475 screws. :crybaby:

+1 for Avon tires... although the Metzlers are great too.
 
Rad studded tires!! How much did you get those for? I'd like to set up my WR250X with some of those!

yeah, thanks. I think I'm gonna go for 100% on-road tires and skrape up a set of rims for knobbies later.

Me going to school, I'm just not going to get to off road like I say I will and I need or want the best I can for long term.


Gosh, trying to find tires is hard. So many brands and broad pricing, then so-so feedback from the net...:rolleyes:




And, me having a 16" rim means :frown: I'm SOL for the below recommendations.

:mad: This damn "Global Economy" has even the best manufacturers passing some junk as "economic". (see some of the Avon's and Dunlop's in the above reviews)

Any of those three would be a good choice, although I don't know much about the 501's. If you ride in the rain, a silica compound is nice to have, and I think of those three, the diablo is the only one with it. I know the diablo are good tires. I'll bet the Avon are very good as well, and i don't really know about the dunflops.
 
I was looking at the Avons Distanza's, the Metzler Tourance and the Michelin Anakee's for my Tiger...

I got the feeling from the reviews that the Avons generally had the most negative reviews in comparing the 3..

Was kinda a toss up between the other two and ended up going with the Michelin's, I think they where a little less $$...

One plug for a vendor too... Our local prices where astronomical... huge markup... :rolleyes:

But www.derbycycles.net in friggen Kentucky shipped my 2 tires via USPS to AK for $50.... :eek: Even credited me back the default shipping fee from the website order of a $100.. And they where still about 120% less than buying local, even with shipping...
 
I can buy tubeless tires, right?

I pictured them as a heavyweight cruiser tire, but Pirelli says they're lightweight....:meh: IDK.


I need a lightweight (and economical) tire...and Kenda's are freaking 6 ply. I don't need 6 ply tires, but I need the price Kenda's selling them at.

FWIW, I think tires are the last thing you should cheap out on. Your life depends on them. Good rubber won't let you down, baring ice or some other unknown, cheap tires on the other hand... well, I won't buy them.

The only reason I have Kenda on my list is, they are recomended throughout searching them, and their site says they're, "ISO 9001 and QS 9001 international standards certification".


But it looks like I'll just go back to the Trail Wing [Trailwing] anyway....:frown:

What about heat cycles?

Will that matter to a 8,000 mile, high quality ($) tire?
