Tires installed "lettering in"

OK, as y'all know, I recently treated my rig to 4 new tires for Christmas.

Well, this morning I noticed something. They installed the tires with the white lettering facing the underside of the cruiser, not facing outward.

I haven't decided whether I like this or not -- aesthetically speaking. I kinda like the pure black on the outside. But you can still see the white on the inside, which bothers me a little. If they were black on both sides, that would be awesome.

So, not taking into consideration "the look," is there any technical reason why I should or should not keep them that way? As in, are the tires engineered to be facing one way or the other?

I'm guessing probably not, but I'm just curious.

It's purely a matter of preference.

I have two sets ( of 5 ) Firestone Destination M/T's in 285-75-16 size. On the 80 series they are white letter out, as this is not a main wheeling rig, and the white looks a bit 'cleaner' on my white truck. On the rattle can black 60 series the exact same tire is mounted black wall out, to complete the 'night ops' look.

Do you have a same size spare?

i made them mount the white/blue on the inside......i like the black looks....depends on what tire it is...it will wear off.

Um, no. My spare is the original size. Is that a big problem? Hopefully I'm never too far away from civilization if I get a blowout. (I don't really wheel much, at all.) Or should I put an extra 31" high up on my wish list?

Completly a matter of taste. I mounted my white letters out and think it gives the illusion of the tires being even bigger than they are (31/10.5). I don't do much wheeling with my cruiser otherwise I may have had them mounted white letters in to stop them from looking nasty after rubbing the sidewall on a rock.

I'm in the same situation and my plan is if I get a flat up front, I'll move the rear forward and put the smaller spare on the rear. But in the middle of the night in the pouring rain on the freeway, I doubt I'll stick to the plan.

hmmm i would think to keep it up front because of no power to those wheels...it woulld pull but if ya had it in the rear there would be power to both wheels and one would be spinning faster than the other..but it is limited slip.....um some one should have the answer...

About the spare- the reason I ask is because if you have a flat on the rear axle and swap your smaller wheel onto that axle then you'll have serious problems. Your diff will bind up and either one of the wheels will always be chirping or you'll have broken diff gears.

If you have a flat on the front axle then it'll pull like crazy, but will be OK as long as you don't have the hubs locked.

Put that extra 31" on the wish list. Or buy a used 31" from a local tire shop.

I buy tires 5 at a time so I can do a 5 tire rotation to keep the tread relatively even- but it's not a big deal if you choose to do a 4 tire rotation.

Well my $.02...I like the letters out, kind of gives it a sporty look, but I agree if you wheel alot, black is the way to go.

grrlscout, like Doc said, go to a tire shop and pick up a used 31" for a spare (around here they charge $25, including disposal of your old tire and mounting of "new" tire, but no balancing, which isn't a big deal for a spare).

Yea, just when I thought I had the maintenance on mine under contol... something else pops up. It's a never ending cycle of cash hemorrage.

That light will start coming on as the brake fluid resevior level starts to get below the minimum line.
