Could anyone help?
We have a 100 series with the stock Dunlop Grandtreks, Thinking about changing them to a better looking and performing tire for the sand (beach/desert). They will also need to be good on the road as this is where most of our time is spent. Would anyone have any advice?
Thanks,
LCUAE

I think just about any tire will do in the sand so long as it's aired down. I'd go with a quality AT tire if it will be mostly driven on road.

I've heard good reviews on the Michelin, a good AT tire will be decent as well. Stock dunlops are useless on and off road all they do is spin. Just remember the more aggressive the tire pattern the more it will dig off road so you should adjust driving style accordingly.

AHHH desert nomad! I am a huge fan of your truck! Ive seen your Cruiser on youtube with that excellent fj60! Thanks for the advice, will do some research!

I am now running the Hankook Dynapro ATM's on my 100. They are pretty solid in every aspect and have held up well after about 15K miles.

In the past I've run a bunch of All Terrains and the only other one I'd consider are the BFG TA/KO's

The BFG's I've had wear extremely well. I had 30K miles on mine and they had plenty of life still on them. Mind you, they are heavy. The three ply sidewalls are great if you're off road where sharp objects are pretty common. They don't road ride as nice as the Hankooks but were no trouble balancing or at high speeds.

I'll 2nd the Michelin. I spend a lot of time in east coast sand and they work well. Like TXL said, you really just need to air down properly. I will run 24 psi a lot since I'm doing a lot of hard surface also but if it gets a little dicey I will drop to 18 in a heartbeat.

I cruise deep beach sand, climb over steep dunes, and often muddy rutted out dirt roads in addition to many highway miles, and the tire I chose was the Firestone Destination A/T after reading reviews on tirerack (#1 rated AT tire) and elsewhere. It's been a year now (so add deep snow to the list) and I really like these tires. They haul my 80 series through deep sand with little effort, and yet are a fairly mild, very quiet tire on paved roads. They also have a very good treadwear rating, and so far mine seem to be bearing that out.

Just aggressive enough: (although they look much more aggressive in person)

I highly recommend the Michelin LTX A/T 2 for deep loose sand and good behavior on-road. I run 275/65-18 and since getting them I don't have to air down anymore when going from the Interstate to sand roads in the dunes. Decent gas mileage, quiet ride, and great wear are all pluses. The little biting edges around the sidewalls seem to add traction in sand. If I did air down, I assume they would be even better.

Airing down is also done to save wear and tear on the drive-train. I don't have to air down either, but it takes quite a bit more throttle to start moving, keep going, and climb hills with full pressure than it does aired down.
I only go down to about 15-17 psi for normal beach conditions, a little less if I'm expecting WET sand as in a flood tide. And that drop of about 18 psi makes a big difference. I barely give it any gas to start up and cruise around.
