Anybody have any direct experience with siping M/T tires?

Anybody have any direct experience with siping M/T tires?

I did it to some of my tires, but it was all guess work. I also grooved them. the siping chunked out pretty bad on the rocks. I still have the tires if you want to see them. I could get pics if that's easier.

Thanks for the info. I would like to take a look, maybe this weekend sometime? Whenever actually. Let me know what's good for you.

my parents will be in town this weekend and I'll be very busy. I'll put up some pics tomorrow. if you want to see more, we'll set it up for next week.

Thanks. Did you do the whole tread? I'm thinking of just doing the center two tread blocks and not the outside ones. Specifically to avoid chunking.

Are you thinking of getting it done or doing it yourself? The last I heard there was nowhere in NM that did it anymore.

Doing it myself. I have access to a grooving iron I can use. Tire shops cut them from shoulder to shoulder. I don't want to do that. You're right though. I think you have to go to CO to get it done by a shop.

GRRRRR! no pics will be forthcoming from me today. I got forced in on OT. that turns this into a 72 hour shift. :crybaby:

No hurry, no problem.

I had a set of BFG M/T's siped at the Discount Tire in Santa Fe a few years ago. They removed the machine the following summer. They only did the center and it worked out very good. Minimal chunking and I believe it was effective though it is hard to say because that was my first set of M/T's and I had them siped after about 200 miles; all on pavement. The cost was nominal considering the amount of work involved.

As Steve mention, there are no shops in the state that have the equipment any more. At least as far as we have heard here on local discussion board.

I would do it again.

Thanks, that's good info for me as it's exactly what I want to do. I know there are no shops here, but there are still some in Colorado. However, still think I may do it myself.
