Somebody pease tell me what this tink tink tink is coming from my undercarriage?! is it my exhaust manifolds? muffler? what is it? Its just this casual TINK that bugs the crap out of me. And when i turn my cruiser off it tinks for a while until it cools down or something... Can anybody explain this to me and also explain what would need to be fixed/replaced to make the noise go away. THANKS!

For whatever it's worth, my car makes tink noises after you shut it off as the exhaust system cools off. I think it's really normal for a great big V8. My Suburban did that too. The Mazda and Subaru four bangers in the driveway don't do it as much.

yeah its definitely been a familiar sound on all my V8's. Im just double checking that it isnt going to lead to any problems...I mean my girl almost has 200k miles so i expect a few rattles/noises...that "tink" is particularly annoying though haha. I just want to know what causes it??

Tinkle bearings... dang things are noisy...

if i replaced both exhaust manifolds would the TINK TINK go away?

No. It's the exhaust pipe cooling down and contracting. Exhaust pipe is pretty high strength tubing and exhaust gas is hot. The pipe expands a little as it warms up. When it cools off, it contracts, and you get the noise. I don't know that I've ever heard a vehicle that didn't make that noise

Great response! Thanks. Thats the info i was looking for. All is well mechanically.

The catalytic converter can also make the noise. It's due to the catalyst support structure heating and moving differently than the housing. At least that's what I've been told. It seems reasonable. There's nothing that can be done about it and nothing is wrong

As stated in the title, does it make this sound at idle as well? If so, not sure what that could be, but that doesn't sound like a cooling exhaust as it wouldn't be cooling at idle.

It does make that sound while idling as well...

its most definitely coming from the exhaust... just cant seem to pinpoint exactly where.

I posted a thread on this a while ago. Mine pings at idle and after shutdown. I posted a video with the sound after I shut down, but it makes the same sounds while at idle. I just don't pay attention to it anymore.

What's making this metallic ping?

It's that high $$$ stainless steel exhaust system your 100 series comes with

Give Doug Thorley a call and he can cure that sound:)
