I've just replaced the timing gears on my 2F, which were pretty worn and exhibited excessive backlash. The new gears meshed well when installed, so well that any backlash was indistiguishable. Upon restarting the engine, I'm getting a noticeable whirring or whining sound from the timinig gear area. I'm hoping that they just need to wear in a bit and will quiet down after a few weeks. I have confirmed that they are getting oil by loosening the timing cover and observing the oil drip out. Does anyone have similar experiences with new timing gears?

Thanks

Toyota gears?? After market cam gears w/o the dampner ring tend to be noisy, so much so I've removed them before cause I don't like to hear that s***....

I'll venture they will quiet a LITTLE in time, but if non-OEM, then they just may remain noticable.
In the right motor, a little gear whine sounds 'right'. Not so much in the sewing machine sounding 2f's.

The gears are non-OEM so no dampener ring on the cam gear. I think I will just live with the whine unless it gets worse...it sounds funny for a 2F though. I'll just pretend it's a supercharger.

That dampener may reduce noise but is certainly not as strong as a one piece cam gear. In my opinion it is one of the weak points of the stock 2F.

A solid steel gear belongs in any hi-performance 2F...........

It takes many, many thousands of miles and years to kill that gear.... most fail because of high HC levels in the crankcase that deteriorate the rubber.... HCs are mostly controlled by the owner through maintenance of the engine...... but I see you took the short-cut and sawed it into.....
