I figured out how to use the timing light. Got a shock once when I turned the distributor from the top. Held the base after that. It seems it was adjusted out to the max already. That is, The distributor will turn no further counter clockwise. What am I to make of this if I'm still getting pinging up an incline?

puzzled.

If you have no adjustment I believe you will need to rotate to the next groove on the shaft and to do that you will need to take a long screw driver and extend it down the hole and turn the oil pump slot about the same amount so that all will line up. That should put it back in the middle and give you adjustment both ways. Maybe someone else will chime in and add to or correct me if I am mistaken.

Yep, sounds like you should move over one grove clock wise. Are you even able to see the "BB" in the timing window?

Do a seach on timing and get yourself a manual.

A full on tune-up might be needed.

If you're still pinging after setting the timing, then it's on to other causes.
Namely, excess carbon build-up, overly hot plugs (which i doubt you have), or a faulty EGR system.

I've been consulting a stack of manuals. I've read many of the threads on the subject. These are my first attempts at a tuneup. Have done many things already.

I can see the bead-no problem. I watch it move as I turn the dist. back and forth with the light on it. It's doing what it's supposed to.

There seem to be conflicting reports. One thread says to advance it more. Others are saying I need to go back. In it's present, advanced state, it pings. Should the bead be centered on the line or back towards the lower side of the little window as I have read?

The greater the advance the greater the likelihood of pinging.

Proper timing is set where indicator on the bell housing (the line in the window), splits the bead/circle.
The lower the bead, the more the advance.

Advance is the degree to which your timing falls before 'top dead center' (TDC) and is indicated by a 'line' on the flywheel. The bead/bb/circle is a mark that is 7 degrees 'before top dead center' (BTDC), and that's where your timing should be set. The further you set your timing from TDC in the direction of the bead , the more advance you get.
