Greetings.

Just purchased an '83 FJ60 about two months ago... I still can't believe what this rig can do off-road!

Had an issue with the drive belt for the smog pump eating itself.. Thought it may have been a leak from the P/S pump - causing the smog pump to seize. I noticed the air pump didn't turn by hand (initially), but freed up after a while. Yeah, Right.

Just received a re-man'd unit from Cardone ($100 on-line). It doesn't SEEM like a difficult job to change it out (?).

I noticed that the rubber piece between the wheel well/engine compartment came off after I'd been off-road.. Could mud/water getting thown up into the area of the smog pump also cause it to seize?

I'm hoping this new unit will do the trick!

I can't imagine many still have the rubber piece in the wheel well after 20+ years.
I don't think it would have any bearing on the smog pump but I'm no expert.

Its a pretty straightforward job - getting to it and breaking loose some of the hoses can be challenging.

Good luck.

I replaced my first one just before entering the Eisenhower Tunnel west of Denver in about 45 minutes. I replaced the second one at Surf N Turf on about 20 minutes. Yes, I carry one as a trail spare.

Make sure you pull the EGR hoses and clean the black fragments out of the hoses.
