Thoughts on a Pre-runner (1 Viewer)

I sold my '90 pickup last week, but now I find myself down to one vehicle and need to get a second one quick (as in the next few days.)

I have found a 2001 Prerunner (4 cyl, ext cab) locally that has fairly low miles and seems pretty clean. What are your thoughts on these trucks? If I dont like it in a few months, can I sell it easily?

My friend had this exact model and regrets selling it. Never had an issue. I tried to talk him out of it!

Great truck, had one for a short time. Only thing I did not like was the non 4x4.

I know people like the "look", but I've never really understood the appeal of the pre-runner. You get the same crappy gas mileage as a 4x4 without the benefit of 4wd.

Exactly. Pop for the 4x4 and you'll never find yourself wishing you had it when you needed it.

I think it depends on how you plan to use it. Offroading...wait for a 4x4. But if it will be an around-town stuff-hauler it will probably be a bulletproof ride. I had a PreRunner...I personally never needed 4WD when I had it, but it was more of a DD than an off-road truck.

In my opinion you're better off getting a 4x4 More money but you'll be very glad.

On another note, I definitely recommend the 4cyl. I've heard with an auto it might be a little too slow, but my manual trans truck, while not fast, is faster than my old 22R pickup.

A used prerunner can be perceived as a bargain because you're essentially buying a 2wd truck. While it has the same bulletproof motor/chassis as the 4wd, it won't hold its value. Spring the extra $$ for a 4wd and call it a day.

If you're buying it used, a 2wd has already assumed the depreciation. Just think about how many times you've really needed to engage 4wd. If it has a locker in it it is already nearly as capable as a 4wd. Benefit to 2wd is you can throw a spacer or taller coils in it without worrying about front CV angles. Remember most desert racing trucks are 2wd, hence the name "Pre-Runner." Looks like you already have an 80 so you're set for 4x4s.

I think 2WDs are badass, buy it. I had a 2.7 Taco as well, great set-up. Of course mine was 4x4 because I'm not a pussy.
