I recently sold my FJ40 and I will be purchasing a newer vehicle within the next week. I am thinking about a BJ70 from landcruisersdirect.com. I am also considering a 02-04 Montero. Montero gives me a more modern vehicle with parts that are readily available. The BJ gives me better gas mileage and the reliability of a diesel. Montero's are half the price. Any thoughts? I have purchased some land about 45 minutes from my house. I am going to start an organic farm and needed something a little more modern with better fuel economy. Thoughts on availability of parts for the bj would be appreciated. What Vehicle makes more sense ? Thanks Davis

"Sense" is in the brain of the beholder. The BJ40 will be a moderate step up in terms of comfort over the FJ45 while the Montero will be a good 2 or 3 generations ahead as far as SUV's go.
Do you want a brutal heavy duty 4wd or a something a bit softer with some decent on road manners? The 70s are great vehicles but the SWB will mean a bumpy ride
I wouldn't have a 7* series as daily driver unless I absolutely needed the ruggedness.

Parts are going to be difficult in the sense you will be rarely be able to find a major or minor components without some phone calls and headaches. You can lessen the pain by keeping a stock of consumables on hand so you never have to rely on ebay etc.
Some parts off a 60 series can be interchanged
The parts are readily available in other countries, although some owners have found them in stock in the US.

Hi all,

Sounds like you need a Toyota 4wd pick-up with the 4 cylinder engine. A SWB Land Cruiser or a mall-cruiser SUV are not useful on a farm.

I recently drove a 70 series and I thought it was light years beyond my fj40. It was much quieter inside and a lot smoother on the road. I would have traded for the BJ but the deal didn't work out. The SUV's work out better for me (we go on a lot of road trips). Is there any reason to stay away from Montero's? Any issues with the engines? 3.5 liter or 3.8? The land cruisers are almost double the cost of the Montero's! Is this a cool factor or are they twice the rig? I do like to spend money on "cool things" that's why I am asking for help. I want to make the right choice (spent too much money on my fj40)

2 different machines really. The 7* series is one of the 2-3 heavy duty 4wds still in producution.
The build quality is high and the strength of the components is way beyond what most drivers would ever need. The downside is you pay for it in the weight of the vehicle, the high speed handling, braking etc.
The construction is more truck like than car,so thats what you get.
The Montero is going to be much nicer on the freeway/suburbs.
It has IFS and a moncoque body which is generally considered weaker but its what you get if you want car like road manners.
They are called a Pajero in Australia and owners take them to some pretty remote areas and back. Some have complained that the body has excessive flex .The V6 engines have been around a while and are used in some of their cars also,so no dramas there although I would rather have the Mitsubishi diesel engine.
I guess the 70 will have cool factor if you are in a country where they are scarce and you go for that sort of thing.
Yes the 70 is a step up from the 45 series ,especially if the 45 is from the 1960/70s.
This question can only be decided on your needs and what you want from the vehicle.
