Hey did I get pre-approval ?? Cause it just let me drop a new thread into the gen board .. Hmmm

TY

haha -- there is no real pre-approvals, and that's what makes me nervous -- it needs to be tighter --

:D

zero experience with phpBB...

this forum is in vBulletin (paid) and I've also setup 3 other forums under simplemachines.org - SMF is pretty nice for free software...

Should be a setup for new users, at least emailing a password or sumthin....

honestly, I'd be surprised if you had problems tho....even with the traffic this place gets, trolls are VERY rare....

so why did you go from the freebie program (simple machines) to the paid v-bulletin? did you buy or lease?

THANKS!

at the time, simplemachines was still in it's infancy....untried, and the early version I loaded was VERY limited in features. My biggest concern was regarding LARGE forums...I had done a lot of research, and ZERO monster size forums used either YaBB-SE or SMF...but quite a few used vB.

I purchased vB - and will likely continue yearly with the fee to ensure the latest version (tho, I'm already behind ...lol)

vB offers more toys to work with, but is WAY harder to setup - I tossed over 80 hours into vBulletin PRIOR to even converting from the old worthless YaBB-SE stuff. It is very feature filled, but really is overkill for all but the largest forums. In your case, I wouldn't recommend it.....unless you anticipate thousands of users....

Another reason I chose it was so many are already familiar with other forums on the same software....consistency is sometimes a good thing.

I have SMF installed on a few local club/business sites, and it seems to work nicely. Its very similar to the old YaBB-SE software (some of the same developers).

verry cool -- thank you for this -- i will likely do the SMF route -- I don't have 80 hours for anything right now -- :D
