Okay, so help me out here. Recently, I've been thinking about selling my 40.

I think an 80-series might better fit my needs right now, and I need some help weighing the pros and cons. With the prices of decently built 80s falling, I think I might be able to get enough for the 40 to get a well-maintained 80 with some goodies like lift/tires/bumper/sliders, etc.

Stuff I'd like to be able to do:

Home Depot runs - I have to borrow a buddies explorer anytime I need to pick up 2x4s, 4x8 sheets of plywood, etc. I have a lot of up-coming projects on the house, and an 80 would make this part easier.

Camping trips - It's been over a year since my wife and I have been camping. I think that has a lot to do with her not being comfortable in the 40 for drives over a couple hours. It's hot/cold. The gas/exhaust smell makes her sick, etc. My hope is that with an 80, these trips would become more frequent as she'd be riding in comfort.

Wheeling trips (with the wife) - Yeah, the 40 is great at wheeling. It runs well enough to get me to Rausch Creek and back without any trouble, and I'm willing to deal with any discomfort associated with the drive. But my wife's not. And it's not just the drive, it's the actual wheeling experience. I've taken her twice, but those were both within the first 6 months of my owning it. She says she doesn't like wheeling. I think she doesn't like exhaust fumes, heat, kidney busting jolts. Yes, there are things I could do to the 40 to improve some of this.

Drive around in a convertible on nice days - We used to both hop in the 40 and just "drive" on the weekends, but since she got her convertible mini cooper last year, we use her car for this purpose. Gas prices are only making this worse.

Long hauls with her and the dogs - The mini fills this role now when we're visiting family in the midwest, but it sure is tiny.

Allow friends to ride with us - I don't like other people driving. I think I'm better. Our vehicles don't allow for this too well.

That's all I got for now. I know I'd probably regret selling the 40 down the road. Not making any more of them, etc. But I just feel like the cruiser now is something that we have so that I can have fun. With an 80, the chances are that we'd have a cruiser that would let us both have fun.

Help.

Oh, and I can't have both. We only have the parking spaces for two vehicles, not to mention that she'd kill me for even suggesting two cruisers.

Also, down the road when I can afford to have both, I'd probably buy a 40 that's not quite so nice as my current one. Not the the body is perfect, but it's in pretty good shape. I don't really see myself building it up too much more than it is now. If I had it to do again, I'd get a cheaper, well-running truck that I wouldn't mind tearing the hell out of.

I've owned an 80 and it won't fit a sheet of plywood inside and they are generally too nice to turn into a pickup. Why are you having so much trouble with exhaust fumes? Where does your tailpipe come out - to the side or to the rear?

It exits out just behind the ds rear tire. I think the issue is partially that she's overly sensitive to it, but I'll check for any leaks.

Felix:

I feel your pain. Follow my plan - get your wife the FJ Cruiser for now and in 10 years it'll be your wheeling rig once she gets something newer. :D

Seriously though, it may be tough to find something nice and comfortable enough for day-to-day traveling that you'll also want to wheel.

My day-to-day travel is my bike. I don't need comfort or mpg for daily travel, just better for occasional travel, plus everything previously mentioned.

ok...maybe that isn't such a great idea...if you want comfort - go for a 55.

Felix,
What about the fact that your 40 is registered as an antique....that makes it sooo easy to own. The 80 will cost more to own in insurance, emissions and safety inspections, tags, annual registrations....etc.

I do understand your train of thought, as I have tinkered with the same notion.

Kinda my thought too. In my darker days I've thought about selling my 40 as well, but my wife convinced me to keep it as the cost was minimal. I also have limited parking, just enough driveway for my Civic and wife's FJC. I keep the 40 under a car cover in the overflow lot.

That's the thing. She's not asking me to sell the 40. In fact, I'd probably have a hard time convincing her to let me sell it. I just feel like she and I together might get more out of an 80.

It used to be registered as an antique, but when I sold my daily driver, I put regular plates on the 40. Even though it's not my primary way to work (bike), I still need to prove to the DMV that the 40 is a third vehicle in a house with two drivers in order to get antique tags, again.

You point still holds on insurance and emissions, though.

Hi Felix, I find it crazy that you have to prove anything to the DMV to get a antique plate. I thought Maryland MVA was a PITA but that is just crazy.

The exhaust smell your wife hates is probably the unburned HCs because your truck has no catalytic converter. We are all so used to modern cars we forget what exhaust used to smell like before emissions. If you install one it will greatly improve the exhaust smell. You just need to make sure you are also not running very rich or you will kill your new cat very fast.

It seems like the 80 would be a much better fit for what you want than your 40. You can deal with the abysmal mileage because you bike to work. You will get people hauling and pet capacity you will never get with the Mini or the 40. You will get a quiet climate controlled environment which I am sure you and the wife will like. Another option you could consider would be a 60. Simple, no electronics like a 40 but with AC, capacity, and some creature comforts.

If you are going to be doing a ton of home projects you may want to consider selling the 40 and sitting on the money while you decide what you want to do and buy a $1000 pickup off CL and run that for awhile. After I sold my truck to Sebastien everytime I complain to the wife about hauling lumber in the Civic she tells me to rent the Home Depot truck or have TW Perry deliver what I need. An option I have yet to use but would resolve the need for a truck.

It does not sound like you want to keep the 40 but one thing that could improve the comfort would be installing AC. I am very close to pulling my York on board air and replacing it with AC and an electric air source.

Felix,

Why not think about a 2nd gen 4Runner. You have seen mine and it does hold 2X4's and 4X8 sheets of plywood. It also has AC for on road travel, and the hot days on the trails. It drives well on the highway. Gets 20mpg on the highway and 17 around town. They are inexspsive to maintain, and will start in any weather. Being smaller than the 80 I think it wheels better, can go into tighter places, not as top heavy, lighter, and there are lots of after market parts and stuff for them.

I was thinking this to. But if you want the cool vintage feel, get a 60. Most people will think its a cool old land rover, so its sort of like that old jeep you drive.......;) Plus you get some of the modern comforts and a drivetrin you're familiar with. Plus, you could get a pretty awesome 60 series for whatever you sell the 40 for.... I remember when we swapped trucks that weekend, the convertible factor was pretty cool and its a good truck. I would think about how to make it more spouse friendly before selling it. Maybe some cushy seats, ac and bondo up the hardtop.

I think you'd reget it:bang:

PS... My girlfriend doesn't like riding in the 60...

Felix you cannot go wrong with an 80 my girlfriend loves mine. I have had two 60's and the 80 is just hum.... sweet.....I have had it at RC, OC Md and GWNF just a few little scratches. It has alot more room then the 4 Runner which is what my girlfriend drives. Last time we went camping we filled the back with a load of firewood then put our gear on top. We tried camping with the 4 runner but it just does not have enough room. The 80 just has alot more room for the gear the dog etc.. and can handle the trails as well...... Our plan is to take it to Moab next year. I am looking forward to meeting you guys..one day

Thanks for the thoughts everyone.

So, I pitched the idea to the wife. She told me I was crazy. That I'd regret selling it, and she doesn't want to go wheeling no matter how comfortable the ride.

There goes that.

Maybe I'll wait a few months a see if this 80-lust passes.
