I believe ya, but I wouldn't blame Mr. T as much as I'd blame the U.S. specs.... I mean, who were the geniuses that determined what was let in and what wasn't? It sure wasn't Toyota - they would have supplied what they were building for the rest of the world given the chance. The EPA is your target 😷 I would say.
Nope, they only brought what had the highest markup due to the infamous chicken tax. That is why poverty packs are so rare. EPA was not the issue tariffs were. Started in 1964 and still in effect to this day. A poverty pack, manual truck would get better fuel mileage.

And I suppose the "chicken tax" kept diesels out, too?

The tariff was already 25% the Land Cruiser was already significantly more expensive then it's domestic counterparts, diesels had a poor image in the US in the 90's. They couldn't have a "luxury" price and image with a diesel, and adding it would just add even more cost.

There also what the market demanded.
We as enthusiast are a small nitch market the average buyer did not want a diesel or a stick shift.

You can thank the genius' and bean counters at GM in the late 70s for the poor image of diesels. Trying to convert a 350sbc to be a diesel engine without beefing it up and designing it properly led to a multitude of failures and basically ruined diesel's image in the US to this day for passenger cars

The late 70s GM diesel was based on an Oldsmobile 350 Not a Chevrolet, pulled several under warranty back in the day

Maybe I'm wrong but your volt gauge seems a little high to me.
Never an issue. Mind you the harness was swapped out from a 3F to 3FE so there could be a bit of crosstalk issues. Who knows. I don’t study a Toyota volt gauge. All are loopy

Offloaded those heavy ass drawers and stuffed them in a 200 today

I thought the chicken tax only applies to light duty trucks?

Land Cruisers fall under the SUV and van tariff in 1992.

We are getting way off topic, but there are a lot of interesting things that happened d/t the 25% import tariff, the subaru brat, ford's transport and MB sprinter, VW type 2, bedless chevy loves, etc.

All pretty wild. I think in a free market economy we should be able to have anything we want. :meh:

Wow I’m just seeing this thread and it’s a delight to read! I always thought it was a shame we only got the petrol/auto “luxury” spec 80 series here in the US — if I’m not mistaken the equivalent of the VX Sahara overseas..

Not to mention we also missed out on the Nissan Patrol and of course all the J70s

The H 150/151/152 series transmissions. We were also denied them. They are so much nicer shifting than the H42/H55……

This one has an H150. The overdrive is not much but damn it shifts so tight.

Yeah, wonder what year the stripes changed. Would have to be later since mine is a 91….
When I search through the ones for sale, it looks like they changed almost every year. The one that Lo2ay posted looked like a 93/94. I find that stripe under both years.

But it has the 95 up front grill.
