An “unlocked” transfer case is what allows full time 4wd trucks like the 100/200/80 to not bind up on the road.

Well your transfer case is also unlocked when it's in 2H because the front is not engaged. Of course the transfer cases operate completely differently.

So a few weeks ago when Beno was in town he told me that he was on the search for a factory auxiliary tank for @jmlockwood for the Diesel 60 he is having built.

John had a LRA tank for the project and also some cool skid plate he wanted to use and the LRA hangs down too much for the skid plate.

Long story short, he had Ian send me the LRA and I’d trade him all the auxiliary tank stuff.

Tank arrived Friday and I was stoked until I realized that the tank won’t work on my 3FE truck because the exhaust crossover.

Son of a bitch.

This won’t work but it’s here now and the tank is not working in my truck now so it’s got to come out if I was ever going to make it work anyway so it came out to take care of John’s project.

All you California guys need to skip this part and pick up on the next post. I drained the rusty gas into a 1/4 barrel and torched it away

Tranny jack made it easier than I thought

Dropped to take to the local radiator/tank cleaner

Next I started trying to remove all of the dual tank related parts while leaving the main tank in the truck.

I quickly realized that was not going to happen so it was time to nut up and pull the main tank too.

Luckily I had @Dustin Messina run the tank near dry thinking I was installing the LRA. It only had 5 gallons in it

Once the second/main tank was out I was able to get to all the over-complicated BS that is the aux tank stuff. I hope Ian simplifies this and does not replicate the Toyota transfer stuff but it’s all going to Idaho with a clean tank soon.

This cool ass getup is what allows you to swap from the main tank to fill the aux tank

Beno will source new gaskets and such for the tank to go back in.

The aux tank was full of rust to the point that the filter and return tube were both blocked.

I got them out and they cleaned up nicely. The fuel gauge sending unit was also rusted up pretty good but I managed to get it cleaned up pretty good as well. May need a new one if they are still out there

I cleaned up my filler neck for the main tank as well. Since mine is out it’s going to get cleaned out as well before I reinstall it.

I’m going to clean up the fill tube and the rest of the stuff before it gets stuffed back in.

@under_psi came by and helped me drag the 80 out and pull the 45 in while I wait for the 3rd and the standard filler neck from @SNLC to arrive

Why don't you just re-route the exhaust? Looks a bit crusty anyways.

Cheers

I don’t see anyplace to reroute it. Trust me I looked because it all has to be redone.

So where is the issue? Muffler, crossover pipe?

You should see some of the ways exhaust gets ran to fit a v8 in a Land Cruiser.

Cheers

It’s the crossover. There is literally no other place to put it and the huge ass tank is in the way in all the other spots.

They sell one for this model and of course the one that goes into the aux spot but this one is for an FZJ. No other way.

As for V8 40..... there is an off the shelf crossover pipe that makes it easy as pie with the correct manifolds

Loaded the stinky ass gas cans into the Warthog and made a trip deep into the hood in Jackson for a deep clean.

I got home and cleaned up the parts headed north.
