That sucks! Do you need a driver? I have a Camry not doing much right now.

I wonder what happened? maybe forcing it into gear?

Wow thanks for the offer!!! Im borrowing my brother in laws car since hes not using it since hes over seas. Im guessing whacking it into gear with the hammer and crowbar grenaded that c clip. How late are you up at night? I dont get home till 10pm from work and may need an extra hand a few days this week. Im just glad i got home and it didnt lock up on the highway or something.

It was a great day of wheeling besides the issues i had! I wish we were able to camp this weekend, we (well mainly me since, Aimee as much as she loves wheeling, would be bored s***less) could have stuck around to watch that TREC race!

I wanted to watch the KOH qualifier!

10pm? s***! if you need a hand let me know.

Geoff and Aimee? What are the odds that 4 people would pair up into 2 different couples and both couples had no idea how to spell...Then the children of those couples would meet and double down on the poor spelling gene?

LMAO!!! Its funny because both our last names are not spelled phonetically either, EVREYONE botches them up. People must think we are assholes correcting the spelling of our first and last names anywhere we go!

Yea it sucks getting home at 10pm, the neighbors must love to hear that impact popping off at 1030-11 at night!!

Got the shifters off and the floor taken apart in preperation to drop the units. So far theirs a groove down the middle of my input gear on the crawler, and the edge of my 4.7 gears is wore down, im thinking from the shift assembly. Im almost thinking that the clip may have broken prior to this trip!!

Damn Geoff, that sucks. I've got a couple vehicles laying around as well if you need something to drive.

Sorry I missed the trip, but there's always next time. I may be needing a badlands run in a few weeks, I want to get out one more time before I tear the landcruiser down.

I may be in for that....

The 4runner works great...that can not be tolerated...I must break it.

No...don't break it...not for a couple more trips anyways

Depending on when the next trip is & how well I recover & can handle the bouncing...I wanna go wheeling again

I'm put away for the winter.

For anyone that gives a rats ass: Talked to josh at inchworm and the clip that i thought i broke is not on the high low shift rail like the one i was pounding on with a crowbar. The C clip is on the 4wd rail. SO it either popped off sometime that day, or popped off sometime in the past 3 months ive been driving this thing. I guess ill know for sure when i finally crack the cases open!! The more i think about it and after i started working on it, i think the grinding noise is from something stupid on my part, but im not going to admit it until i get evreything taken apart.

Geoff, Geoff, Geoff.....we don't do stupid things when we work on our stuff.....it's simply R&D that proved to not be advantageous to our current set up....therefore proving to be beneficial to others as a "what not to do"

Sir Gum, that trailer set up is looking quite smart! I must say

Damn Geoff, hope this all looks worse than it really is.

Todd the trailer looks sweet. I like that it sits lower than I thought it would, and I see many open spaces for storage to be added as you see the need.

In case anyone gave a crap, i have my crawler and lefty tore down. I cannot find any damage in there besides a few small indents on the low speed idle gear where it mates up to the needle bearings where that c clip was chewed up and a few indents on a gear on the front wheel drive gear. My double row bearing on the mc 07 adapter is wearing out faster than it should be, so im going to press that out and swap in the one off my old taco crawler adapter. It has 20k miles on it and looks brand new, as opposed to 5k and wore out like the new bearing. Looks like all i have to do is clean evreything up and bolt evreything back together. Im glad i dont have to go on a wild parts chase!!

But what caused the failure in the first place?

But what caused the failure in the first place?

Looking back at marlins 4.7:1 gear install intructions and talking with josh at inchworm, the factory c clip on the 2-4wd rail is supposed to be replaced with a lower profile clip or removed. The clip needs to be removed due to the 4.7:1 gears being larger and possibly contacting the clip. I didnt remove said clip. Now if the clip was knocked off by the gear itself, that means it must have happend right when I installed evreything a few weeks before hoedown during my test drive/crawl around the neighborhood or at hoedown itself. That clip was banging around in there (maybe or just caught by the magnent) for about a month of DD duties. I only found 3/4 of the clip, theres no other pieces in there that i can find, so they must have been ground up. I think thats where most of the shavings in the oil came from, that and some rubbing on the scissor gear in the crawl box, and the low range gear in the lefty rubbing on the shift detent thing. Im surprised theres not more carnage in there. I dont know how i didnt notice, the setups been noisey from the start, but i blamed that on it being gear driven. The griding noise on the way home was from the case being in 4wd, and the front axle discoed. The case has always made noise in 4wd at high speeds and i cant figure out where its coming from, theres no sign of rubbing anywhere on any of the gears in there. The only thing i can see is some slight metal flashing on the idler gear contacting a bolt head for the 6808 bearing retainer. Im also thinking thats where the fluid puking all over came from, the box getting hot from being in 4wd for 2 hrs at 60mph. Needless to say im getting really damn good at tearing down and rebuilding toyota tcases and crawl boxes................. Just not assembling them back the proper way lol!

Cliff notes: Installation error and I left a part on that should not have been. Due to the fact my lefty and crawler has inherent toyota honey badgerness, it didnt give a shift about a c clip and ate that s*** and kept going.

Glad you found it. Lemme know if you need a hand.

I will man thanks! I really hope this is the only issue, i have no idea what else would cause so much metal shavings in the case, with little wear on anything!!

Glad it ain't FUBAR. I didn't put the smaller c-clip on...I left it off the t- case shift rail
but did put it on the shift rail in the reduction box, cause that is the only one that could possibly go far enough to let the shifter come out of the rail (I don't see it ever happening unless some weird impact happened to the shifter)

Why do you drive at hi-speeds in four wheel drive?
I rarely ever use 4wd on the road & if it is so bad out that I need it, I don't go fast
Just wondering

I was tired and forgot to shift it out!! I just hit the ADD disco switch for the front axle and forgot to shift the lever !! :bang:

Too many damn levers and switches in this thing, its like I drive a damn front end loader or something!!!
