Crap, I have to clean out the back of the truck to pick up some tires and it looks like sleet and rain for quite a while.

You only hafta go one way! I gotta leave you and then head south!
Packing the dog, dinner, and rain suit!

Any one here know the late model Tacomas well? I have been battling a bearing noise. It sounds like it is coming from under the truck and not the engine bay. I replaced the wheel bearings and the drive line carrier bearing. I am not sure what else to look at.

sounds like you need some of these. I have thought about trying to find a place that rents them to diagnose what I think is my rear tc output bearing but figured the job was easy enough to just start throwing parts at it.

That would probably do it. With each fix it seemed to get quieter, but there is still a bearing noise. Maybe I'm just hearing things.

I had a second gen Tacoma for 3 years. Never had any bearing noise. I did have some prop shaft noise that got better by greasing the zerks and the expansion sleeve fitting rearward of the carrier bearing. It wasn't anything major, just a really faint noise. It'd also bind a little when the weight shifted under braking, creating a slight "pop" sensation when the weight distributed back to the rear of the truck as it bound and then released. Greasing everything on the prop shaft and u-joints fixed that all up though.

When I did the carrier bearing I greased the ujoints. I didn't see any other grease fittings. Is there more than the 3 u joints to grease ? I'm hoping it's not the transmission but not sure. For all I know it could be the new tires. But it does sound similar to a wheel bearing. And about the same frequency.

Yeah, nah I took it to the dealer. There's a TSB for "driveline clunk" that they'll pull the shaft and grease the slip yoke for you free. Fixed my clunk after braking and coming to a stop.

There are just the zerks on the spiders for the u-joints that are easy to hit with a grease gun. Some folks put a zerk in for the slip yoke, but it doesn't seem to be a major enough deal to warrant it.

I greased the zerts while doing the carrier bearing. Didn't seem to help. I really don't want to take it to Toyota or a place like AAMCO. I've checked the tacoma forums but haven't figured it out. Also there are a few rattles under the hood that are driving me nuts right now. I'm a little OCD when it comes to squeaks and rattles.

I'm with Matt. Chassis ears.

There's a guy over on tacomaworld.com, Bill, that has a set. We used them at a meetup to diagnose some CV noise on a guy's truck. They're worth the money. Clip all the transducers on, put on headphones, switch the selector until you find the noise. There's an "Alabama BS" thread over there, and he's a regular in there. Not sure when the next TW meetup is, but he'd probably be willing to bring them and help out. He's a mechanic at a garage down in Marion, AL.
