Clank, I think you are on to something with the ford idea. A buddy let me borrow his f150 to pick up a washer/dryer. This thing is NICE. It rides great, it's comfortable and this is just has basic package. Not a kings ranch or any of the luxury options.

No, no ,no - you are missing the point. Ford in general(aka f150) = very bad. Ford 250 with 7.3 and preferably a manual transmission = very good. Very small subset and the prices are crazy . I was shopping for one before I bought the latest 80 and it is easier to find a nice 80 now than it is to find the f250 you would want.

look at the mileage vs price on these (manuals are harder to find and more expensive):

If this really was 4wd you would be in business:

Yes as Matt states....
I can't stress this enough Only buy a 7.3 and make sure that it is a pre 2003..
Also learn to work on it yourself because though they are extremely reliable and easy to work on you will be very hard pressed to find some one that knows what they are doing.. Never... Never take it to a ford dealership (unless of course, you enjoy people doing unspeakable things to you with chainsaws).

I was just commenting on the ride quality... I would like a diesel. I am months of research away from buying anything. First question to answer when (or did) production leave Mexico and come to the states.

As far as I know the big boys have always been produced in kentucky.
The 7.3s were built in Huntsville.
I know there was a truck plant in Michigan and in Canada but I don't think any heavy or super duty's were made there.
For price I would be looking for a 95-96 heavy duty crew cab short bed.

Edit Engine produced in Indiana; not sure where I got Huntsville from.

Perfect
If this was for sale when I bought the 100 I would be driving it right now..
White excursion XLT 4x4 and VINYL FLOORs perfect.

I like the older body style F-250s that ran up until 97 with the 7.3, 96 with the gasser, it still looked and drove more like a truck though. You would have to contend with a less cushy seat, more vague steering, and stiffer springs.

Wait wait wait... Have you ever driven a long wheelbase one ton around a city? I'd recommend trying it first.

Not saying I wouldn't drive one. There are times that I feel a bit dirty for wanting one, just because they're enormous, will tow a small single family home, and are generally indestructible. However, the few times I've driven big 2500 / 3500 LWB trucks, sweet Jesus, it's like driving an aircraft carrier. Screw a land yacht, you gotta line stuff up WAY in advance to park or maneuver in any sort of tight spot.

I'd think if one of your criteria for ditching the 80 is it's city manners... this is not a step in the correct direction.

This is true.. Thats why I said short bed. They are still long but not as bad..
I had a CC LB and it was an aircraft carrier, but man I loved driving that thing through Atlanta; as soon as folks heard the sound of the apocalypse and saw that behemoth blowing smoke they got the he** out of the way.

The hundred just doesn't demand the same kind of respect.

I know this is counterintuitive but it was supper easy to parallel park (if you could find a spot big enough).

I couldnt park the thing at the new PARA facility.
I already avoid the new mall because of parking, among other things.

what i was driving this morning was a single cab short bed.

Kaits mom has a 2012 tundra TRD 4 door with the 4.6 that thing is BADASS. and I feel like it drives great and turns well especially for its size. but it literally cost as much as our first house.

I wish I could get a 1st gen taco with a 4cyl diesel. that seems like it would be perfect.

put a ranch hand on the front and a resonator on the back. :hillbilly:

oh and they aren't as bad at parking in regular spots as you would think... you just have to back into them to get the required turning radius.
Man this is seriously making me itch to buy back my old truck..

I have seen full size trucks park there, they are longer than the designed space so their ass end (or front end) is sticking out into the lanes of traffic.

this is really making me want to move to Perfection, Nevada

^^^^

This is awesome as I have one that will start college in a few years.

She wants to go to MIT.

I've driven a 37' motorhome pulling a 20' trailer... through rural roads South Alabama, in the dark, lost, HOLY CRAP!
