They keep the drug money...

I have a question for everyone. All opinions are welcomed and encouraged.

A new shop just opened in town and I called to get a quote on my axle swap. Explained my situation and they said at most 10 hours of work for a total of 750$.
Here is what that 750$ buys.
I bring red and green to their shop and leave them.
They pull red and green axles
Place red (locking) axles under green.
Green axles and all the suspension parts that were removed from red, and the rest of red, put back on the trailer ready for pick up.

Does that seem like a good price? or should I keep slowly working on this project in the yard?

750 seems like a good price to me....
But you always have to think about what cool stuff you can get for that money..
That's almost a Bumpit rear bumper kit or a good set of 315s.
I don't know how much time you have but if I thought I had the time i would do it my self.
For me time and money seem mutually exclusive.

Also lockers IMHO are over rated all they do is get you into more trouble..
For you it means pulling the winch line less.
I would do the rear let that go a while then do the front.

I thought about that. Especially since the brakes on my front have less than 5k on them and all my seals are good. I can't say the same for the red one. But I thought about the trouble and expense of making two trips to the shop.

I don't think it's a secret that I want a rear bumper and 315s. If I got a bumper though that would make accessing the back that much more difficult. And since bfg ats wear like iron I have a while before I "need" tires. So either way I spend that money im buying toys. Not necessities.

And 750+ what I pay for the axles im north of what I think ARBs would cost. Way over a lunchbox locker but I really only want selectable anyway so that doesn't matter.

I'm just hoping to flip my axles after all is said and done to bring my cost down some. But I'll still be spending money, lots of it.

I'll buy yo axels when you prepare to sellum
I still need to buy those lower control arms from you.

I'm not sure but, i think if you don't care about the red blinking light you can do a quick and dirty with a rocker switch to get it going.
It doesn't seem like physically swaping the rear axel would be that hard.

What are you needing Zack's axles for? Hoarder!

Free floater and I want the brakes for the front and rear. Haha.

I dont think it would be hard. I'm just limited on time, tools, and skills.

Since one day I'll swap for a v8 and ditch my factory computers/controls anyway I think I'll skip using factory wiring and use this. http://www.lowrangeoffroad.com/index.php/toyota-e-locker-switches.html

With that harness and switch I think the rear would be a really easy job..
Though I have never dropped the rear of a cruiser I have dropped a lot of rears (something about that just doesn’t sound right). Unless I’m missing something; I don't think there is that much skill involved. I think you could swap it out in an afternoon with some help.
If you haven’t done it buy the time I get my 80 cleaned up and sold I will be glad to help.
The front might be a little more challenging but I still don’t think it would be too bad.

I know a guy who swapped rears. He said its super easy.

I'm going to pull the cruiser forward next weekend and work on the rear end some. Maybe I can get a fire lit under my arse and get some work done.

How hard is it to rebuild a rear axle? Is that a reasonable HAMM project?

Here I might be showing my ignorance but... Why rebuild?
If the bearings are good just drain and fill then run with it..

Agreed.

What... That I'm showing my ignorance?

I just scaned through a few rebuild threads i doesn't seem like somthing that should scare you..
Just need to make the SST but even that seems easy.
Also it doesn't seem like there would be much advantage to doing the job "off the truck".
Unless you want to pull everything apart to clean and paint all purty like.

I don't know what shape it's in. I figured it would be nice and easy to do it now while I got it out so I don't have to worry about it later.

Are the brakes on the rear same as the front that you have to take it 1/2 way apart to change rotors?

I don't stop well, I have new pads/rotors up front. I would like new pads and rotors in the back as well as new calipers all around.

I have read that people can lock up 37s. Some times early before everything gets warm I can roll through the stop sign at the end of the road.
