Let's talk. The place that saved my dads quoted me 89 over the phone.

$89 is a friggin bargain. I asked my tech guru friend who has had it done, and he replied:
Unfortunately, yes, I managed to fry a drive that was only partially backed up. After trying a few home remedies with fractional success (the freezer trick gave me a few extra minutes before death), I ended up sending it off to DataCent.com in Canada. It cost me about $650 to have all of the data recovered from a 600Mb drive, plus the cost of a 1Tb drive to which they restored my files. I bought my own and sent it along with the burned out drive. They were able to recover everything. It took a couple of weeks if I recall correctly. Pricey, but it was competitive at the time.

That sucks man. Best of luck with it. I lost a drive with a bunch of digital photos a few years ago, and have been pretty OCD about backups ever since then.

I don't have 600$ worth of files to save.

What is the freezer trick? A few minutes might be long enough to try and save my word files. I'd sacrifice my media if I could just get my school stuff back.

Sometimes if it's a mechanical problem, freezing the drive and the associated contraction of the various metal parts will give you just a few minutes of operation.

I wish. I'd rather deal with a virus than a physically damaged hard drive.

From my apple geek friend...
If its an iMac...take it to apple ASAP
If its a MacBook...prepare to buy another hard drive and pray that you can save anything that may be lost.
Happened to two of my friends iMacs and one MacBook.
He also said it may be OS related if you made a switch from one to another.
Could be logic board if you're getting a screen with several languages.
Is the hard drive if you get a ? On the screen.

That's what I was able to get info wise.

Thanks. Yea a question marked flashing folder. No start up. Even at the store doing their safe boot mode or what ever. I dont know what an iMac is. I just have a regular Mac laptop. It's not an air or a pro.

My buddy said best buy or apple/Mac store could possibly get you a backup if your hard drive isn't totally spent.

Mac store told me I was SOL. I'm taking it in the morning to the local store. I dont know when I could make a trip to bham to see Eric. I'm going to try and sweet talk my way into a data recovery new hdd combo pack. Situations like this are when a nice perky set of double ds would come in very handy.

Isn't school about to start over there in the 'loosa? Find some innocent looking coed with a nice perky set of double d's and tell her there's a nice crisp green portrait of Andrew Jackson in it for her if she gets it fixed free.
