ok here's the question.

How much is a new or completely rebuilt F motor or should I look for a 2F or a diesel to put into my 1973 fj55.
I would do the rebuild but don't have the time due to working two full time jobs.

Any recommendations welcome.

It is hard to get a good rebuild on an f for less than $ 3000. Here in Portland there are two shops that come to mind. Portland engine rebuilders and Bearing services. BS is your more expensive option. My sugestion is to source out a healthy 2f. If you have good diagnostic tools such as a compresion tester and a leak down tester you will be able to reduce the risk of buying used.

I faced the same delima and looked and looked for a running used 2F for 6mos and couldnt find one close so I bought a 2F w/ blown HG for a 100 bux. 4 months and 1200 later I have a rebuilt 2F in the pig. I reused my crank, cam and pistons.

Be aware of some of the subtle differences and search on the "best 2F" if thats the route you chose. If your not going to build it, collect all the parts and make a good plan and educate your machinist on exactly what you want. Id agree on the 3k figure if someone else does it.

I am in PRK, but if I weren't, I'd run diesel. JMO. Good luck. FYI, I am sticking an 86 2F into my 77 FJ55-the later style water pump and fan combo will only give me about 3/32" between the rad and fan hub! So if you go w/ the later style 2F(I like it BTW) then either use the older pump and fan, or maybe you'll have to go electric. Also, late heads have a plug in them that leaks and needs to be plugged. Bonus w/the 55, you can keep the factory a/c bracket! AND later blocks have PS bolt holes already. HTH
